Tesla Recalls Thousands Of Self-Driving Cars Programmed To Run Stop Signs

Huffington Post - Tech news and opinion

Tesla is recalling nearly 54,000 cars and SUVs because their "Full Self-Driving" software lets them roll through stop signs without coming to a complete halt. Recall documents posted Tuesday by U.S. safety regulators say that Tesla will disable the feature with an over-the-internet software update. The "rolling stop" feature allows vehicles to go through intersections with all-way stop signs at up to 5.6 miles (9 kilometers) per hour. The recall shows that Tesla programmed its vehicles to violate the law in most states, where police will ticket drivers for disregarding stop signs. The Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents state highway safety offices, said it is not aware of any state where a rolling stop is legal.

AI for Healthcare Gets Practical as IBM sells Watson Health

#artificialintelligence

At one time IBM Watson Health was featured in articles that claimed it might cure cancer. But the splashy coverage of IBM's artificial intelligence brand aimed at the healthcare industry was maybe an instance when the hype about a particular technology -- AI -- got ahead of that technology's actual capabilities. After a few high-profile public failures over the past several years, IBM has announced that it is selling the parts of its Watson Health business to private equity firm Francisco Partners -- a sale that many in the industry had expected for the past year. The assets sold include data sets and products from the many acquisitions IBM completed to roll into the Watson Health brand including Health Insights, MarketScan, Clinical Development, Social Program Management, Micromedex, and imaging software. Francisco Partners will employ key members of the Watson Health team and stand up its own business in the future, the companies said in the announcement of the deal.

Elon Musk is placing a bet on robots. It could be a long time coming

#artificialintelligence

Washington, DC (CNN)Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday that he believes the company's goal of a humanoid robot is the most important thing it's working on. The electric vehicle manufacturer first announced its robot plans at its AI Day last year. Instead of showing off any sort of prototype, a person in a robot suit walked stiffly on stage and proceeded to dance, spin and pretend to jump rope. "Obviously that was not real," Musk told the audience, after thanking the person for their robot performance. On the company's earnings call Wednesday, Musk said of its planned robot, "This I think has the potential to be more significant than the vehicle business over time."
