RS21 Wins Spot on $241M Artificial Intelligence Contract for DoD
RS21, a data science company developing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies for high-impact sectors, has been awarded a basic ordering agreement (BOA) for the Data Readiness for Artificial Intelligence Development (DRAID). The award was made on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) and has a $241 million ceiling across task orders over five years. The U.S. Army Contracting Command awarded agreements to establish a decentralized vehicle that streamlines rapid procurement and agile delivery of AI data readiness capabilities for the DoD. Through the DRAID vehicle, RS21's capabilities will be available to support AI data readiness services to meet DoD requirements. RS21 will compete on specific task orders released for the JAIC DRAID to build reliable, ethical AI-enabled systems intended to transform the DoD and increase opportunities for AI activities across the Department.
Artificial intelligence and robotics uncover hidden signatures of Parkinson's disease
NEW YORK, NY (March 25, 2022) โ A study published today in Nature Communications unveils a new platform for discovering cellular signatures of disease that integrates robotic systems for studying patient cells with artificial intelligence methods for image analysis. Using their automated cell culture platform, scientists at the NYSCF Research Institute collaborated with Google Research to successfully identify new cellular hallmarks of Parkinson's disease by creating and profiling over a million images of skin cells from a cohort of 91 patients and healthy controls. "Traditional drug discovery isn't working very well, particularly for complex diseases like Parkinson's," noted NYSCF CEO Susan L. Solomon, JD. "The robotic technology NYSCF has built allows us to generate vast amounts of data from large populations of patients, and discover new signatures of disease as an entirely new basis for discovering drugs that actually work." "This is an ideal demonstration of the power of artificial intelligence for disease research," added Marc Berndl, Software Engineer at Google Research. "We have had a very productive collaboration with NYSCF, especially because their advanced robotic systems create reproducible data that can yield reliable insights."

Ukraine is employing face recognition technology to identify invading Russian troops killed on its soil, a complex and unprecedented avenue for software already seen as problematic, experts said Thursday. The embattled nation uses details resulting from the process to try to track down and notify the families of the dead, in an act Ukraine says is aimed at piercing Russia's war information filter. While this type of artificial intelligence could offer closure to families denied it by the fog of war or Kremlin secrecy, the potential for mistakes is considerable and consequential. "If you're a Russian parent being informed that your child has been killed when it's not true, that gets into a complex ethical dilemma," said Jim Hendler, director of the Institute for Data Exploration and Applications at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York state. US-based Clearview AI, often criticized by privacy advocates, says it gave Ukrainian officials free access to its service that matches images from the internet to pictures uploaded by users trying to identify someone. "The Ukrainian officials who have received access to Clearview AI have expressed their enthusiasm, and we await to hear more from them," Hoan Ton-That, the firm's co-founder and CEO, said in a statement.

Lucid Motors will use Nvidia's auto-grade computer chips in its vehicles to enable advanced driver assistance and autonomous driving features, the companies announced Tuesday. The automaker's current and future lineup will be built on Nvidia's end-to-end Drive Hyperion platform. Hyperion is the latest iteration of Nvidia's Drive platform that allows automakers to customize their own driving features. This new hardware will form the basis for a new suite of driving features, including advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), automated parking, and autonomous driving, the companies said.
