Google is adding support for 24 new languages to its Translate tool, the company announced today during its I/O 2022 developer conference. Among the newly available languages are Sanskrit, Tsongae and Sorani Kurdish. One of the new additions, Assamese, is used by approximately 25 million people in Northeast India. Another, Dhivehi, is spoken by about 300,000 people in the Maldives. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the expansion allows the company to cover languages spoken by more than 300 million people and brings the total number of languages supported by Translate to 133.

Today, the Department of Commerce hosted the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC). Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo noted in her address to the NAIAC members that the committee will assist the federal government by providing insights into AI-related issues and complement the Department's work with international partners – including the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC). Deputy Secretary Don Graves also addressed the NAIAC, emphasizing his hope that the committee's recommendations would help the nation chart a path for responsible and inclusive AI that will advance economic equity. The NAIAC is administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST Director and Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology Dr. Laurie Locascio emphasized how scientific and technological advances have expanded both opportunities and challenges for standards and measurements that cultivate trust in technology, part of NIST's mission.

Beijing is paving the way for driverless robotaxis. China's capital city granted permits to auto startup Pony.ai and Chinese internet giant Baidu to offer self-driving car services to the general public, both companies announced today. Both operations will start out small -- Baidu's fleet will consist of 10 cars and Pony.ai will run four cars, reported CNBC. Eventually both companies plan to expand operations in the city. The Beijing government is requiring a staff member to be onboard each driverless vehicle to make sure things go smoothly.
