Resonai, which uses AI and AR to create digital twins of buildings, raises $20M in funding - SiliconANGLE
Digital twin startup Resonai Inc. announced today that it has closed on a $20 million extension to its Series A round of funding, bringing the total amount raised to $30 million. New investors, including Meitav-Dash, Blue Square Israel and Irani Ventures, all participated in the round, as did existing backers SBI, Vive Nevo and Redds Capital. Resonai is the creator of the Vera platform, which uses artificial intelligence and augmented reality technology to convert physical spaces into intelligent digital environments that enable more immersive, real-world experiences. Using the Vera platform, a theater space, retail setting, a spacious apartment or any other kind of building can be scanned and sent to Vera's AR cloud to create a highly accurate 3D digital twin. This virtual space then becomes available via the cloud and is connected to Vera operated apps and mobile devices.
Google co-founder's flying car startup is winding down
Google co-founder Larry Page's flying car startup Kittyhawk is winding down, the company announced Wednesday. "We're still working on the details of what's next," the company wrote in a LinkedIn post. Kittyhawk was founded as Zee.Aero in 2010 when Page recruited Sebastian Thrun, who had worked on self-driving cars and other experimental projects at Google, to create electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The company unveiled a demonstration video of a flying car in 2017, and Thrun said he envisioned a time when people would be able to hail flying cars through an app like Lyft or Uber. Kittyhawk showcased a flying car model called the Flyer in 2018 that could hold one person and fly up to 20 miles. Thrun told CNBC in an interview earlier that year that the models could take to the skies within five years.

'Deepfakes' of Celebrities Have Begun Appearing in Ads, With or Without Permission
And last month a promotional video for machine-learning firm Paperspace Co. showed talking semblances of the actors Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio. None of these celebrities ever spent a moment filming these campaigns. In the cases of Messrs. Musk, Cruise and DiCaprio, they never even agreed to endorse the companies in question. All the videos of digital simulations were created with so-called deepfake technology, which uses computer-generated renditions to make the Hollywood and business notables say and do things they never actually said or did. Some of the ads are broad parodies, and the meshing of the digital to the analog in the best of cases might not fool an alert viewer.

Uber to Let Marketers Target Riders by Destination
CMO Today delivers the most important news of the day for media and marketing professionals. Companies like Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Meta Platforms Inc.'s Facebook have long recorded users' web behavior to target them with ads. Retailers such as Walmart Inc. and Kroger Co. can track when, where and how you shop for the benefit of brands that advertise with them. Uber has been building its ad business for several years, though most of its growth to date has come from ads placed on the Uber Eats food-delivery app, said Mark Grether, general manager of Uber Advertising. The ride-hailing ad business could grow far larger, Mr. Grether said, especially when self-driving cars become more common.
