US slaps sanctions on Iranian drone and missile production

The United States has announced that it is sanctioning Iranian industries that produce ballistic missiles and drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which the US says have been used to facilitate Russia's war in Ukraine. In a news release on Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the sanctions would target seven people in leadership positions at Qods Aviation Industries -- an Iranian UAV manufacturer -- and Iran's Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO), which manages the country's ballistic missile programme. "Iran has now become Russia's top military backer," Blinken said in the statement. "Iran must cease its support for Russia's unprovoked war of aggression in Ukraine, and we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to disrupt and delay these transfers and impose costs on actors engaged in this activity." Iran is fueling Russia's war in Ukraine with its provision of UAV technology. Today, the United States sanctioned seven people involved in Iran's UAV and ballistic missile programs – programs Moscow is using to target Ukraine's critical infrastructure.

An artificially intelligent stroller with a hefty price tag is the latest innovation announced to aid parents. Canadian startup Glüxkind Technologies announced that it had been named a CES 2023 Innovation Awards honoree for its smart stroller "Ella." The product, with a purchase price starting at $3,300, includes environmental danger alerts, intelligent braking and 360-degree monitoring. In a press release, Glüxkind noted the stroller's ability to push and brake regardless of terrain and even when fully loaded with groceries and toys.


French medtech Volta Medical snaps €36M to detect and prevent cardiac diseases using AI -- TFN

Volta Medical, a France-based health technology company developing AI solutions to assist electrophysiologist physicians and surgeons, has secured €36 million in Series B funding. With this, the total funding raised by the company accounts for €70 million. The investment round was led by the US-based Vensana Capital alongside participation from Lightstone Ventures (which backed Dunzo and Nimbus Therapeutics) and existing investor Gilde Healthcare. The funding will help accelerate new product development, support additional clinical trials, prepare for full-scale US commercialisation, and pursue further regulatory approvals. The company's lead product, VOLTA VX1, is the first commercially available AI decision-support software to help guide physicians with identification and real-time annotation of unique abnormalities on 3D anatomical and electrical maps of the heart.
