Google Thinks You're Ready to Converse with Computers

#artificialintelligence

Google has done well out of its search box. As our collective dependence on computers and the Internet has grown, we have come to use it more and more--helping Google swell to its gigantic size. But on Wednesday Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, said it was time to move on from the conventional search engine that his company was built on. He unveiled Google Assistant, an evolution of Google search designed to act like a virtual concierge. If you search Google for "movies tonight" on your phone today, it will display the films in local theaters.

Uber Self-Driving Car Tests Begin As Ride-Hailing App Takes On Google, Apple, Tesla And More

International Business Times

Uber has announced that it is in the early stages of testing self-driving car technology with the ultimate goal of removing the need for drivers from its ride-hailing business. "Real-world testing is critical to our efforts to develop self-driving technology," the company said in a blog post announcing the move. "Self-driving cars have the potential to save millions of lives and improve quality of life for people around the world." Why Google's Allo messaging app is a big step backwards

#artificialintelligence

A year ago, when Google began to unwind Google, it felt like a positive sign for the company's underperforming social efforts. After sinking years into building a product overstuffed with photos, communication tools, link-sharing, and discussions, Google began to shrink them into more manageable tools. The results were largely positive. Google Photos has become a monster with 200 million monthly users, the company said during its I/O keynote. And communities evolved into a more modern take on message boards, emerging last week as a new mobile app called Spaces.

SAP Technology Targets Inequity in Workplaces Around the World

#artificialintelligence

Using text mining and machine learning based on the SAP HANA platform, the initiative aims to help companies review job descriptions, performance reviews and similar people processes for potential bias and suggest changes to encourage equity. The announcement was made at the 28th annual SAPPHIRE NOW conference. These new capabilities will complement existing SAP SuccessFactors offerings that already help address inequity. Analytics and reports focused on diversity and inclusion are available to help organizations identify and track where biases exist in talent acquisition and management processes -- recruiting, compensation, succession and the like -- coupled with guidance on actions to take to address those biases. SAP is also exploring applications for mentoring programs that will help people from historically disadvantaged groups more effectively navigate and develop their careers, as well as tools for balancing family and work that will integrate elements of benefits, scheduling and management into a single process.

How Much Will Google Home Be Watching You?

Huffington Post - Tech news and opinion

Google is fighting harder than ever to get into your household. On Wednesday the company announced its entry into the voice-activated virtual assistant race with Google Home, its answer to the Amazon Echo. Google Home promises to live alongside you wherever you reside, answering your questions, playing your music and reading your news, much like its popular rival. It'll also have Google search built in, which means it'll know a lot about you as soon as you sign in. "We want users to have an ongoing two-way dialogue with Google," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said at the company's I/O developer conference on Wednesday. To be sure, the company already knows where you are, where you live and what you had for dinner this week (assuming you find your recipes through the search engine).

Google Home, designed for music streaming and other entertainment, features built-in search capabilities. The "virtual agent" answers simple questions and carries out basic tasks.
