Microsoft's Bing A.I. made several factual errors in last week's launch demo

#artificialintelligence

During last week's chatbot hype, with Microsoft and Google attempting to outduel each other in showcasing early versions of artificial intelligence-powered search, more than 1 million people signed up to try Microsoft's tool in the first 48 hours, the company said. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told CNBC that the technology, which can spit out complete answers that read like they were written by a human, was "perhaps the industrial revolution brought to knowledge work." But for those concerned about accuracy, the AI leaves plenty to be desired. In Microsoft's demo in front of reporters, the ChatGPT-like technology embedded in the company's Bing search engine analyzed earnings reports from Gap and Lululemon. In comparing its answers to the actual reports, the chatbot missed some numbers.

Measure the Business Impact of Amazon Personalize Recommendations

#artificialintelligence

We're excited to announce that Amazon Personalize now lets you measure how your personalized recommendations can help you achieve your business goals. After specifying the metrics that you want to track, you can identify which campaigns and recommenders are most impactful and understand the impact of recommendations on your business metrics. All customers want to track the metric that is most important for their business. For example, an online shopping application may want to track two metrics: the click-through rate (CTR) for recommendations and the total number of purchases. A video-on-demand platform that has carousels with different recommenders providing recommendations may wish to compare the CTR or watch duration.

Amazon's Zoox is now operating its purpose-built autonomous taxi on public roads

Engadget

Amazon-owned Zoox has started offering driverless robotaxi rides in California after receiving a testing permit from the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles), the company announced. Unlike the autonomous vehicles from Cruise and Waymo, Zoox's vehicles are purpose built for driverless taxi rides, so they have no steering wheel or pedals. On February 11th, shortly after receiving the permit, Zoox conducted the "first run of its employee shuttle service in Foster City, California, marking the first time in history a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi without traditional driving controls carried passengers on open public roads," it wrote in a press release. To get to that point, the company completed what it called "rigorous" testing with the vehicles on private roads. It also ran its L3 test fleet (hybrid Toyota Highlanders with safety drivers) over a million autonomous miles on data-gathering missions in San Francisco, Las Vegas and Seattle.

The Morning After: A Japanese restaurant combats 'sushi terrorism' with AI cameras

Engadget

Many people in Japan have been outraged by a recent trend dubbed "sushi terrorism." Videos across social media show people carrying out all kinds of unhygienic acts, like licking the spoon for a container of green tea powder. Another video, which has more than 98 million views on Twitter, showed a person licking the top of a soy sauce bottle and a teacup's rim before putting them back at a branch of the Sushiro chain. The company said it has replaced all the soy sauce bottles and cleaned every cup at the affected restaurant. To combat this gross trend, one chain, Kura Sushi, said it would use artificial intelligence to look for "suspicious opening and closing of sushi plate covers," Nikkei Asia reported. The company plans to upgrade existing cameras, used to track the dishes customers take from conveyor belts to determine their bill, by early March.

Wearable AI Device Market is Predicted to Surpass a Revenue of USD 69.31 Billion by Growing at Notable a CAGR of 26.10% During 2022-2028; Growing Adoption of Artificial Intelligence and Rising Health Awareness Among People to Drive Market G

#artificialintelligence

As wearables like glasses and watches become more popular among consumers and become more relevant to fashion trends, the market is expected to increase dramatically. In fact, it was found by SkyQuest in one of the research that more than 441 million smart wearables were supplied globally in 2021. Additionally, it is estimated that increasing usage of technologies like sophisticated cloud technology, IoT, and machine learning would increase demand for AI-based products, which will in turn propel market expansion. The wearable AI device market in North America region is predicted to gain the largest market share by growing at a significant CAGR during the forecast period. The growth of the market can be ascribed to the increasing adoption of cutting-edge technology, the presence of significant smart watch manufacturing businesses, and increasing consumer disposable income. Additionally, it is predicted that rising demand for smart timepieces/smartwatches in wealthy countries like the United States will spur market expansion. SkyQuest noted that in 2019, more than 20 million smartwatch pieces were sold in the USA and this is estimated to increase during the forecast period owing to growing urbanization and millennials' rising interest in smart gadgets.

Github To Layoff 10% Of Global Workforce In Latest Tech Cuts

#artificialintelligence

Github has announced plans to cut its workforce by 10% and will go fully remote, closing all of its physical offices as their leaves expire. They announced a hiring freeze back in January, and this will continue as part of the cost cutting operations. As well as shutting down their physical operations and showing staff the door, they'll also be conducting efficiency-led changes throughout the business to bring costs down. If it seems like there are new layoffs announced every day, it's because there practically are. We've seen layoffs from all across the tech sector, including household names like Google, Meta and Microsoft.

Google v Microsoft: who will win the AI chatbot race?

The Guardian

The James Webb space telescope cost $10bn (£8.3bn) to build, but it left Google nursing losses of more than $160bn after the search engine's new chatbot answered a question about it incorrectly. Google and Microsoft both announced plans for AI-enhanced search this week, taking the artificial intelligence space race into a new phase. However, the launch of the former's new chatbot, Bard, misfired badly when the error appeared in a demo. The competitor to the Microsoft-backed ChatGPT was asked about the telescope and one of the answers displayed said it "took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system". Experts were quick to notice the inaccuracy – as were investors.
