IBA - Law requires reshaping as AI and robotics alter employment, states new IBA report
The present wave of automation, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) โ the development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence โ is creating a gap between current legislation and new laws necessary for an emerging workplace reality, states a report published today by the International Bar Association Global Employment Institute (IBA GEI). Gerlind Wisskirchen, IBA GEI Vice Chair for Multinationals and coordinator of the report, commented: 'Certainly, technological revolution is not new, but in past times it has been gradual. What is new about the present revolution is the alacrity with which change is occurring, and the broadness of impact being brought about by AI and robotics. Jobs at all levels in society presently undertaken by humans are at risk of being reassigned to robots or AI, and the legislation once in place to protect the rights of human workers may be no longer fit for purpose, in some cases.' She added:'The AI phenomenon is on an exponential curve, while legislation is doing its best on an incremental basis.

Up to 30% of existing UK jobs could be impacted by automation by early 2030s, but this should be offset by job gains elsewhere in economy - Press room
Up to around 30% of existing UK jobs could face automation over the next 15 years, but new AI-related technologies will also boost productivity and generate additional jobs elsewhere in the economy, according to new analysis by PwC in its latest UK Economic Outlook report. This involves looking in detail at the task composition of jobs in different industry sectors and occupations, using machine learning techniques to model the potential impact of AI in the future based on OECD data. The study estimates that the UK (30%) has a lower proportion of existing jobs at potential high risk of automation than the US (38%) and Germany (35%), but more than Japan (21%). PwC's analysis finds the likely impact of automation varies significantly across industry sectors: transportation and storage (56%), manufacturing (46%) and wholesale and retail trade (44%) have the highest proportion of jobs facing potential high risks of automation among the larger sectors. Education and health and social work are estimated to face the lowest risks of automation given the relatively high proportion of tasks that are hard to automate (see table below).

Why Artificial Intelligence is Disrupting B2B Sales
AI is rapidly creeping its way into the software we use on a daily basis. Everything from CRM to Account Based Marketing (ABM) to marketing automation is getting "smarter." The promise of AI powered systems to suggest qualified leads to a B2B sales person is very exciting. One aspect of AI that is very exciting is its ability to tap into unstructured data to learn more about prospects as they engage with a brand's digital channels. Examples of unstructured data include online engagement such as tweets, comments, likes, shares, etc. Think about the potential for smarter systems to reduce much of the heavy lifting associated with identifying qualified sales opportunities.
Toyota Research Institute Brings Artificial Intelligence To The Hunt For New Materials
Initial research projects include collaborations with Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, the University at Buffalo, the University of Connecticut, and the U.K.-based materials science company Ilika. TRI is also in ongoing discussions with additional research partners. "This represents a fantastic opportunity to drastically advance the use of databases and machine learning methods in materials discovery," said Jens Norskov, Professor at Stanford University and director of the SUNCAT center. "The partnership combines theory, computation and experiment in an unprecedented, concerted effort. We are particularly excited by prospects for an avant-garde approach to catalyst development for fuel cells."

Domino's Delivery Will Begin Using Self-Driving Robots To Bring You Pizza
Pizza company Domino's teased a driverless delivery robot back in 2015, and now it will be a reality for some customers. Domino's is using a fleet of autonomous robots built by Starship Technologies to deliver pizza in European cities, Starship announced Wednesday. The robots, which are different from the previously teased vehicle, will deliver pizzas within a one-mile radius around a Domino's locations in selected cities in the Netherlands and Germany. Domino's Group CEO Don Meij said the robot delivery units will "complement" the company's current delivery methods, such as cars, scooters and e-bikes. He added that the partnership between the pizza company and Starship makes regular robot deliveries one step closer to reality.
