Smartphone chipsets have evolved drastically in the last decade. Major advances in smartphone technology such as facial recognition, performance improvements and mapping are based on the chipset evolution. Since they bring so much functionality to smartphones, what if the chips could be planted into the human brain? A new venture by smartphone chipmaker ARM and Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering (CSNE) at the University of Washington plans to develop a "brain-implantable system-on-chip (SoC)" for bi-directional brain-computer interfaces to treat neurogenerative disorders". Essentially the company wants to develop smartphone style chipsets, which can be implanted into your brain and help overcome neural diseases such as Parkinson's. At Google's 2017 I/O keynote today, CEO Sundar Pichai introduced new products and shared more information about the company's "AI first" future. Here's a running list of what happened that matters. Users will soon see Google's AI Assistant in a number of new devices -- including the Apple iPhone -- the company announced at its I/O conference in Mountain View, California on Wednesday. Assistant debuted in 2016 and was originally integrated into the company's Pixel phone and Home smart hub. It's since spread to more than 100 million individual devices, Google CEO Sundar Pichai told the crowd at this year's conference, including smart TVs, automobiles and wearables. And it's about to be in a lot more. While Assistant already works with more than 70 smart home device makers, the company announced that it will soon release an Assistant SDK so that developers hardware manufacturers can integrate the service into even more devices -- anything from speakers to blenders, smart locks to web cameras.

Recently, Nasdaq Inc. announced the launch of a new service that looks to put a subset of artificial intelligence technologies toward growing investor profit. Called the Nasdaq Analytics Hub, the new service will leverage machine learning to sift through social media, central bank, retail sentiment and end-of-day trading data, deriving insight that fund managers and traders can then leverage to enhance investment strategies. "We back test the data using a number of strategies," Mike O'Rourke, global head of Machine Intelligence and Data Services at Nasdaq, told Reuters in an interview. "Then we use machine intelligence to add value-added analytics to the data that allows firms to make it more actionable." The newswire noted that financial technology startup Lucena Research scrutinizes the data, sourced from Nasdaq as well as a number of third-party providers.

WASHINGTON – The Intelligence Community is sponsoring a $500,000 prize competition to explore artificial intelligence approaches that would transform the process by which analysts currently support policymakers and warfighters through the research and generation of written products. The Office of the Director of Science and Technology within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence--in partnership with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence--is launching its first challenge contest, "Xpress," to explore AI-based opportunities for generating analytic products that surpass those crafted by traditional, highly-trained IC analysts. Leveraging private-sector momentum in this area will help ensure that the IC continues to employ cutting-edge methodologies and tools to quickly warn and inform policymakers in an ever more demanding and complex global environment. Waymo, the self-driving car unit of Google parent Alphabet, has reached an agreement with ridesharer Lyft to test self-driving car technology, the companies said.
