Waymo Is Putting Self-Driving Trucks on Atlanta Highways. Here's Why That Matters.

Slate

Waymo pioneered self-driving cars; now it's playing catch-up on self-driving trucks. Or is it already in the lead there, too? The self-driving car company, formerly part of Google and now owned by Google's parent company, Alphabet, announced Friday that it will start testing self-driving semitrucks on Atlanta highways next week. The big rigs, made by Peterbilt, will carry cargo bound for Google's data centers, the company said in a blog post. A human driver will be behind the wheel even as the car's software pilots it.

Anexinet Enhances ListenLogic With Artificial Intelligence and Ensemble Machine Learning Capabilities

Advanced topic extraction using AI & machine learning, natural language processing, and regex classifiers to identify topics across all data sources - enabling organizations to diagnose not only what is happening in customer interactions, but why it's happening. Sentiment analysis and entity recognition using proprietary and open source algorithms to understand the overall sentiment and label data by types such as person, organization, location, events, and products. Pre-configured industry dashboards and classifier libraries that address the most common uses cases for sales, churn and compliance to jumpstart time-to-value. Data connectors to a variety of data sources and destinations, send classified data to an internal visualization tool or build powerful apps using the ListenLogic API. On premise or cloud deployment leveraging proprietary data redaction that removes personally identifiable information for an added level of security.

Nintendo Just Announced a Bunch of Switch Games, Including Dark Souls

TIME - Tech

Nintendo fans had plenty to be excited about in 2017 with the release of games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Now in 2018, Nintendo plans to update more of its popular franchises with Splatoon 2 and a Nintendo Switch version of Super Smash Bros. In addition, the company announced Thursday at its Nintendo Direct event, it's bringing a remastered version of Dark Souls to the console. There's no official name for the new Super Smash Bros. installment yet, but a teaser video clip showed mainstays like Mario and Link from The Legend of Zelda series, as well as newcomers such as the Inklings from Splatoon. Inklings, the human-squid hybrids that can transform to swim through pools of ink, have never been featured in a Super Smash Bros. game before.

Google used AI to sort millions of historical Life photos you can explore online

#artificialintelligence

Photographers for the now-defunct Life magazine produced some of the most iconic images of the 20th century and left behind an archive of around 6.5 million photos. It's an important historical artifact, but it represents a big challenge for any human who wants to catalog and explore it. That's why Google has stepped up to the plate and announced today that it's used its AI skills to create Life Tags -- a new, searchable archive of Life photographs. It's also a bit slow to load, makes easy mistakes (check the "computer" tag and you get plenty of pictures of pianos, for example), and misses many useful categories, including the photographer, date, and who appears in each picture. The latter would have required a bit of extra analysis, but Google certainly knows how to do facial recognition.

How a Yeast Cell Helps Crack Open the "Black Box" Behind Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

"It seems like every time you turn around, someone is talking about the importance of artificial intelligence and machine learning," said Trey Ideker, PhD, University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center professor. "But all of these systems are so-called'black boxes.' They can be very predictive, but we don't actually know all that much about how they work." Ideker gives an example: machine learning systems can analyze the online behaviors of millions of people to flag an individual as a potential "terrorist" or "suicide risk." "Yet we have no idea how the machine reached that conclusion," he said.
