Facebook Admits Millions More People Were Impacted by Cambridge Analytica Breach Than Previously Known

Mother Jones

Facebook said Wednesday that personal data for up to 87 million people--tens of millions more than originally thought--may have been "improperly shared" with Cambridge Analytica, the data analytics firm that worked for Donald Trump's 2016 campaign. Most of those affected were in the United States, the company said. Facebook included the disclosure in the second-to-last paragraph of a company statement that also described new measures to restrict third-party access to user data. Recent stories in the New York Times and the British Observer cited a former Cambridge Analytica employee, Christopher Wylie, who said that the Facebook data of more than 50 million people had been harvested and provided to Cambridge Analytica in 2014. The data was acquired, Wylie said, in the hopes of building personality-based models to target and influence voters in US elections.

Google's DeepMind opens new AI lab in Paris - SiliconANGLE

#artificialintelligence

DeepMind Technologies Inc., the machine learning company owned by Alphabet Inc., announced today that it's opening a new artificial intelligence lab in Paris. The new lab will be headed by Remi Munos (pictured), a French native and senior researcher at DeepMind who has authored 150 research papers. In an announcement video, Munos said Paris is a perfect fit for DeepMind's next lab because the city has a thriving AI and machine learning ecosystem that's still growing. "Effectively, there are a large number of research labs in universities, engineering schools and public research centers together with a large number of AI startups who have appeared, as well as large companies that are setting themselves up," said Munos. "Joining this network is a very positive move for DeepMind, to collaborate with this scientific community in order to contribute to research and also to teach students." Frรฉdรฉrique Vidal, France's Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, said in a statement that DeepMind's Paris lab "demonstrates the excellence and attractiveness of the Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem in France," and she added that the country will soon establish partnerships with "the public actors of French research."

Microsoft Plans to Make Artificial Intelligence Available to All Analytics Insight

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft is betting big on'democratising' artificial intelligence (AI) and plans to make it'available to all' to improve lives and transform organizations. Reducing the risk of accidents, predicting the behavior of users, detecting the disease and helping the farms to increase the crop fields are some of the advantages of AI-based innovations. Is it something that would be harnessed by some of the biggest companies in the world? Who is AI for?" said Anant Maheshwari, president, Microsoft India, in his keynote address at the company's'AI for All' conference here. "And one of the core perspectives we have had as a company is to democratize AI and bring it for everyone," he said. Microsoft is helping more than 650 Indian-based partners to build innovative solutions with the help of its cognitive services, AI, machine learning and IoT solutions. The company and its partner firms have deployed AI solutions in different fields such as agriculture, retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, healthcare, education, and BFSI. For instance, Flipkart is using AI and analytical capabilities in Microsoft cloud computing Azure to deliver a customized experience to its users. Ola uses Microsoft's IoT and AI solutions to improve the experience of its passengers and drivers. The telematics platform transforms the car into a high-performance intelligent vehicle, improving engine and driver performance. It also enables to predict breakdowns, make smart navigation and enhance security and safety. Microsoft has signed an agreement with a Bengaluru based healthcare startup Forus, on retinal imaging devices. It would use AI and IoT for early detections of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and help in reducing blindness. "AI is going to be very important because when you can give the response to somebody [patient] immediately, the chances of he taking the whole thing more seriously is very high," said K. Chandrasekhar, co-founder, and CEO of Forus. He said that India had only 20,000 ophthalmologists for the growing population of 1.3 billion. Microsoft also said that as we are entering into the world of AI with all the ingredients like big data, computing power, and cloud technologies together, the company is taking the consequences of AI very seriously. "We don't want to unleash it, we want to be very mindful of it," said Peggy Johnson, executive vice president, business development at Microsoft. "As AI is introduced in our daily lives, we want people to know what is going on with their data," said Ms. Johnson. "If anything should go wrong, you can't say'oh the machine did it' that just is not an acceptable answer.

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Hardware Sales Will Reach $115 Billion Worldwide by 2025

#artificialintelligence

The race for making perfect hardware to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) applications is heating up and many companies are jumping in with their products and solutions. Of the three key parts of hardware infrastructure compute, storage, and networking compute has made significant progress in the last couple of years. The other two areas, storage and networking, are lagging behind and have yet to see major innovations pertaining to AI applications. Currently, the industry is going with the fastest available option and promoting that as a solution for deep learning. Over time, more research and development (RandD) will go into these areas and new products will emerge that are designed specifically for AI.The distributed computing infrastructure that allows AI applications to run on multiple machines is in its infancy.

Robot ANYmal Dancing to Live Music

#artificialintelligence

ANYmal carries an onboard microphone with which music can be perceived. The beat of the music is analyzed and a suitable sequence of dance motions is choreographed. The desired and real motion trajectories are compared such that the delay between music and motion can be minimized. This work has been conducted as part of ANYmal Research, a community to advance legged robotics.
