Gartner Identifies Top 10 Data and Analytics Technology Trends for 2019

#artificialintelligence

Augmented analytics, continuous intelligence and explainable artificial intelligence (AI) are among the top trends in data and analytics technology that have significant disruptive potential over the next three to five years, according to Gartner, Inc. Speaking at the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit in Sydney today, Rita Sallam, research vice president at Gartner, said data and analytics leaders must examine the potential business impact of these trends and adjust business models and operations accordingly, or risk losing competitive advantage to those who do. "The story of data and analytics keeps evolving, from supporting internal decision making to continuous intelligence, information products and appointing chief data officers," she said. "It's critical to gain a deeper understanding of the technology trends fueling that evolving story and prioritize them based on business value." According to Donald Feinberg, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, the very challenge created by digital disruption -- too much data -- has also created an unprecedented opportunity. The vast amount of data, together with increasingly powerful processing capabilities enabled by the cloud, means it is now possible to train and execute algorithms at the large scale necessary to finally realize the full potential of AI. "The size, complexity, distributed nature of data, speed of action and the continuous intelligence required by digital business means that rigid and centralized architectures and tools break down," Mr. Feinberg said.

Here's who has the most juice in Twitter's AI influencer community

#artificialintelligence

Insight analyst Lizzie Dunmore today published an analysis of Twitter interactions on the topic of AI between the general public, the media, and the 18 most influential AI influencers. Dunmore, who works for Onalytica, looked at a year's worth of tweets from 3,000 influencers and 1,000 news media outlets to figure out who the most influential AI tweeters tweeting on Twitter'twere (that's bad grammar; good poetic license). She also determined what impact their interactions (likes and retweets) had on the top media outlets publishing AI stories. Furthermore, she even revealed whether the media outlets or the individual influencers had more influence on the general public. The Top 50 Media Outlets had a 93x larger reach on average than the Top 50 Influencers yet, despite this, influencers' average engagement per follower on AI posts was 168x higher than that seen for media outlets.

Google and DeepMind are using AI to predict the energy output of wind farms

#artificialintelligence

Google announced today that it has made energy produced by wind farms more viable using the artificial intelligence software of its London-based subsidiary DeepMind. By using DeepMind's machine learning algorithms to predict the wind output from the farms Google uses for its green energy initiatives, the company says it can now schedule set deliveries of energy output, which are more valuable to the grid than standard, non-time-based deliveries. According to Google, this software has improved the "value" of the wind energy these farms are providing by 20 percent over a baseline where no such time-based predictions are being performed. We don't know exactly what that value is in monetary terms or in terms of energy output. We also don't know where exactly this is being deployed, although Google works with wind farms largely in the Midwest, where some of its US data centers are located.

Obsidian Security Announces Industry's First Platform for Intelligent Identity Protection Driven by Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

WIRE)--Obsidian Security, the intelligent identity protection company, has raised $20 million in a Series B financing round, bringing the company's total funding to $30 million. Wing led the Series B with participation from GV and Series A investor Greylock Partners. With the unabated growth in adoption of cloud services, security teams are dealing with poor visibility of users and activities across SaaS and the cloud. Administrators do not have visibility into what users do after logging on to these services. Managing user privileges across disparate applications is siloed, burdensome and error-prone.
