New Research Indicates AI May Be Catalyst to Making Healthcare More Human
CHICAGO & LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely expected to drive important benefits across the health system, from increasing efficiency to improving patient outcomes, but it also may be key to making healthcare more human. Benefits range from increasing the amount of time clinicians can spend with patients and on cross-care team collaboration to enhancing the ability to deliver preventative care. According to a new study of more than 900 healthcare professionals in the U.S. and U.K. conducted by MIT Technology Review Insights with GE Healthcare, nearly half of medical professionals surveyed said AI is already increasing their ability to spend time with and provide care to patients. Additionally, more than 78 percent of healthcare business leaders who reported they have deployed AI in their operations also reported that AI has helped drive workflow improvements, streamlining operational and administrative activities and delivering significant efficiencies toward transforming the future of healthcare. "Of any industry, AI could have the most profound benefits on human lives if we can effectively harness it across the healthcare system," said Kieran Murphy, President and CEO, GE Healthcare.
Samsung to make Baidu's new AI chips ZDNet
Samsung Electronics has partnered up with Baidu to produce its new cloud-to-edge artificial intelligence (AI) chip, Kunlun, with mass production slated for early next year, the companies announced. It is the first such partnership between the South Korean tech giant and Chinese search behemoth. Kunlun will be built on Baidu's own XPU neural processor architecture for cloud, edge, and AI and will be made with Samsung's 14nm process. The South Korean company will also make the chips using its I-CubeTM, or interposed-cube, package solution. I-Cube integrates a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) and a High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) onto a silicon interposer to create a single package to increase electrical transference.
Why Intel Acquired Habana
Intel Corporation this week announced that it has acquired Habana Labs for approximately $2 billion. Habana is an Israel-based company that develops programmable deep learning accelerators for the data centre. This acquisition is aimed at strengthening Intel's artificial intelligence portfolio and accelerate its efforts in the AI silicon market, which Intel expects to be greater than $25 billion by 2024. "This acquisition advances our AI strategy, which is to provide customers with solutions to fit every performance need – from the intelligent edge to the data centre," said Navin Shenoy, executive VP at Intel, in a press release. In July, Habana announced its Gaudi AI training processor, which the Tel Aviv startup promised was capable of beating GPU-based systems by 4x.
Hankook Tire Introduces Artificial Intelligence For Compound Development
Hankook Tire showed "tangible results" in its efforts to develop a Virtual Compound Design (VCD) system, a predictive model for tire compound properties using artificial intelligence, the company said. VCD system uses technology that predicts the characteristics of compounds and draws the most optimal combination of the materials through artificial intelligence analysis, which is based on accumulated data without actual testing during the tire compound development. Generally, it takes six months to three years to develop a new compound, but this period is expected to be reduced by 50% if artificial intelligence is used, Hankook says. The new development system operates within the cloud platform by creating a "Digital Twin," a twin of real-life objects, repeating the process of reflecting results derived from virtual simulations into reality and affecting each other over reality and virtual reality to find improved results, Hankook says. After Hankook signed an agreement with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) early this year on research on future technologies, cooperation was undertaken on the project.
Holberton School Launches New Machine Learning Curriculum Encouraging Greater Diversity in this Increasingly Important Field
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 17, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Holberton School, the two-year tuition-deferred college alternative educating the next generation of digital workers, announced the launch of their brand new Machine Learning curriculum which will be available at all eight world-wide Holberton campuses. The announcement was made at the flagship San Francisco campus featuring Grammy award-winner NE-YO, Black Girls Code founder and CEO Kimberly Bryant and representatives from Google (Tensorflow) and IBM. "Machine Learning, and by extension Artificial Intelligence, are increasingly dominating how we interact with technology at all levels, and the need for diversity has never been so urgent," said Gabriela de Queiroz, founder, AI Inclusive and R-Ladies. "Having programming skills isn't enough -- we need people who are aware of the ethical implications of AI, who can bring their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to the workplace and incorporate them into the algorithms that will increasingly play a major role in healthcare, safety, and every other element of our lives." Machine Learning, which gives computers the capability to learn without being explicitly programmed, is already in use across the globe and is rapidly supplementing, and even replacing, traditional software development.
