AI and the Auteur: Implications of Using Artificial Intelligence in Film Studio Decision-Making
The global movie industry generated over $43 billion in revenue in 2018, of which the United States' contribution alone topped more than $11 billion. Yet, these seemingly impressive headline figures can obscure the fact that year-on-year growth has been a sluggish 2 per cent over the last several years, with market researchers forecasting further stagnation. Given the inherent financial risk involved in film making, some now believe artificial intelligence, rather than human expertise, is best placed to select which films are most likely to provide suitable returns on investment. In early January 2020, Warner Bros signed a deal with Cinelytic, a Los Angeles-based artificial intelligence company which, according to the press release, aims to help content creators make faster, better-informed decisions through predictive analytics. Belgium's ScriptBook provides a similar service, touted as "artificially intelligent script analysis and box office forecasting". Warner Bros is not the first film studio to pair up with an AI platform of this type, although it is one of the first to disclose its collaboration publicly.
Groq Announces World's First Architecture Capable of 1,000,000,000,000,000 Operations per Second on a Single Chip
Groq โ the fast growing start-up, inventor of the Tensor Streaming Processor (TSP) architecture and new class of compute โ today announced that its new Tensor Streaming Processor (TSP) architecture is capable of 1 PetaOp/s performance on a single chip implementation. The Groq architecture is the first in the world to achieve this level of performance, which is equivalent to one quadrillion operations per second, or 1e15 ops/s. Groq's architecture is also capable of up to 250 trillion floating-point operations per second (FLOPS). "We are excited for the industry and our customers," said Jonathan Ross, Groq's co-founder and CEO. "Top GPU companies have been telling customers that they'd hoped to be able to deliver one PetaOp/s performance within the next few years; Groq is announcing it today, and in doing so setting a new performance standard. The Groq architecture is many multiples faster than anything else available for inference, in terms of both low latency and inferences per second. Our customer interactions confirm that. We had first silicon back, first-day power-on, programs running in the first week, sampled to partners and customers in under six weeks, with A0 silicon going into production."
Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi Signs a collaboration agreement
He praised the efforts of the academic and administrative staff, whose efforts were instrumental to the growth and development of the university; which is not only a testament to French-Emirati relations, but is also responsible for more than 2000 graduates who have entered the local workforce. He concluded, "We have collectively taken a giant leap in the direction of progress and development and hope to march on with the design of new programs and initiatives that are fully in line with the national strategy of the UAE." Professor Chambaz commented,"This agreement is the first of many educational and research programmes at Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence and we welcome Total and Thales Group as the key stakeholders in this innovative venture. The aim of cooperating with partners from the UAE and France is to support research in the field, create knowledge, and to integrate artificial intelligence into the sustainable development initiatives of the UAE." Mr. Christophe Sassolas, President Total E&P UAE and Total Country Chair in the UAE added "By bringing the Sorbonne's best researchers and Total use cases in close vicinity with Abu Dhabi ecosystem of research institutions and industry, we are contributing to define the future of Artificial Intelligence in the energy sector. We are proud to bring this opportunity for the next generation of UAE talents!"
"Hey, Update My Voice" Exposes Cyber Harassment.
The "Hey, Update My Voice" movement, in partnership with UNESCO, was born out of this context with the goal of teaching respect towards virtual assistants and, in addition, asking tech companies to update their assistants' responses. Because if that happens to them, imagine what happens in real life to real women. Every day around the world, virtual assistants suffer abuse and harassment of all kinds. In Brazil, for example, Lu, the virtual assistant of Magazine Luiza stores, has been victimized by this sort of violence. Worldwide, cases have been reported involving Siri and Alexa, among others.
Artificial intelligence can boost compliance Investment Executive
Over the past few years, the Canada Revenue Agency has been using data analytics and AI, such as machine-learning algorithms that predict tax non-compliance and detect activity in the underground economy. Since 2018, the Department of Justice Canada has licensed the use of Tax Foresight, AI software developed by Blue J Legal Inc. in Toronto, which employs machine learning to predict โ with about 90% accuracy, according to the company โ how a court might rule on a particular tax scenario. "It's not just about speeding up [analysis] that would otherwise happen," says Benjamin Alarie, co-founder and CEO of Blue J Legal and Osler Chair of Business Law at the University of Toronto. "It's about making [widely] available a really good prediction that would otherwise be the domain of an experienced [lawyer]." AI technology could bring more certainty to the interpretation of tax law, Alarie adds: "Everyone benefits from that."
