MWC canceled! How business, tech, travel and autos are shaken by the coronavirus
Your iPhone, television and video game console were likely made in China where the deadly coronavirus is shuttering business operations as scientists race to find a cure. Apple, LG and Amazon are just a few of the household names that are taking measures to protect local workers and business travelers from the deadly outbreak which seemingly began in the central city of Wuhan. As a result, China's manufacturing output is being delayed in ways that will become more pressing as time goes on. Consumer electronics isn't the only sector being rattled by the outbreak that has killed over a thousand people and sickened thousands of others worldwide. Airlines have largely restricted travel into and out of China, curtailing tourism.

Boston Dynamics robot dog goes on patrol at Norwegian oil rig
Meet Spot, the first robot to get its own employee number at Norwegian oil producer Aker BP. Developed by Boston Dynamics, the robot is set to start patrolling Aker BP's oil and gas production vessel at the Skarv field in the Norwegian Sea this year, testing its ability to run inspections, detect hydrocarbon leaks, gather data and generate reports. The upshot for Aker BP, which is seeking to be a front-runner in the digitalization of the oil industry, is to make offshore operations safer and more efficient, the company said as it presented the robot at its capital markets day in Oslo on Tuesday. Aker BP will run the tests with Cognite, the software venture controlled by the oil company's main owner, Aker ASA. "These things never get tired, they have a larger ability to adapt and to gather data," Kjetel Digre, Aker BP's senior vice president for operations, said in an interview.

Coronavirus pushes robots to front lines of China's hospitals
HONG KONG – The deadly coronavirus outbreak, which has pushed the Chinese medical community into overdrive, has also prompted the country's hospitals to more quickly adopt robots as medical assistants. Telepresence bots that allow remote video communication, patient health monitoring and safe delivery of medical goods are growing in number on hospital floors in urban China. They are now acting as safe go-betweens that help curb the spread of the coronavirus. Keenon Robotics Co., a Shanghai-based company, deployed 16 robots of a model nicknamed "Little Peanut" to a hospital in Hangzhou after a group of Wuhan travelers to Singapore were held in quarantine. Siasun Robot and Automation Co. donated seven medical robots and 14 catering robots to the Shenyang Red Cross to help hospitals combat the virus on Wednesday, according to a media release on the company's website.
Stats Perform's Chief Scientist of Artificial Intelligence to Deliver Keynote at AI in Team Sports Conference
Stats Perform, the revolutionary leader in sports AI and data, announced that Chief Scientist Dr. Patrick Lucey will deliver keynote remarks at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-20) Workshop in Team Sport in New York on Saturday, February 8. Dr. Lucey's presentation "Interactive Sports Analytics" will examine new ways to break down player or team performance using big data and AI software. The presentation will include examples of how coaches can draw up and search for specific plays and, using AI and Stats Perform's decades of tracking and multi-agent trajectory data, simulate likely outcomes specific to a particular opponent and the players involved. In addition, Dr. Lucey will demonstrate the capabilities of new body-pose data made possible through Stats Perform's state of the art AutoSTATS technology. "We have reached an exciting moment in sports where coaches and analysts can now leverage big data and AI to generate advanced insights on play development and likely outcomes," Dr. Lucey said. "Imagine a coach drawing up an X's and O's play, the same way he would on chalkboard, on an iPad and simulating likely outcomes based on different sets of offensive and defensive opponents in-play. Imagine then being able to search that play and find video of every time a near similar play was run. With AI and big data, we are already making that happen at Stats Perform and I can't wait to meet and discuss this with the illustrious group of researchers at the AAAI Workshop."
