Intel and National Science Foundation Invest in Wireless-Specific Machine Learning Edge Research

#artificialintelligence

WIRE)--What's New: Today, Intel and the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced award recipients of joint funding for research into the development of future wireless systems. The Machine Learning for Wireless Networking Systems (MLWiNS) program is the latest in a series of joint efforts between the two partners to support research that accelerates innovation with the focus of enabling ultra-dense wireless systems and architectures that meet the throughput, latency and reliability requirements of future applications. In parallel, the program will target research on distributed machine learning computations over wireless edge networks, to enable a broad range of new applications. "Since 2015, Intel and NSF have collectively contributed more than $30 million to support science and engineering research in emerging areas of technology. MLWiNS is the next step in this collaboration and has the promise to enable future wireless systems that serve the world's rising demand for pervasive, intelligent devices."

Abolish the #TechToPrisonPipeline

#artificialintelligence

The authors of the Harrisburg University study make explicit their desire to provide "a significant advantage for law enforcement agencies and other intelligence agencies to prevent crime" as a co-author and former NYPD police officer outlined in the original press release.[38] At a time when the legitimacy of the carceral state, and policing in particular, is being challenged on fundamental grounds in the United States, there is high demand in law enforcement for research of this nature, research which erases historical violence and manufactures fear through the so-called prediction of criminality. Publishers and funding agencies serve a crucial role in feeding this ravenous maw by providing platforms and incentives for such research. The circulation of this work by a major publisher like Springer would represent a significant step towards the legitimation and application of repeatedly debunked, socially harmful research in the real world. To reiterate our demands, the review committee must publicly rescind the offer for publication of this specific study, along with an explanation of the criteria used to evaluate it. Springer must issue a statement condemning the use of criminal justice statistics to predict criminality and acknowledging their role in incentivizing such harmful scholarship in the past. Finally, all publishers must refrain from publishing similar studies in the future.

Reimagining knee replacements with additive technology and artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Italian medical implant manufacturer REJOINT is introducing mass customization and therapy personalization through a combination of Electron Beam Melting (EBM) and computerized analysis of intraoperative and post-operative data collection through IoT-connected sensorized wearables. The market for knee implants is now estimated at around five million implants per year worldwide. In advanced markets, already in 2011 the number of surgical procedures was 150 per 100,000 inhabitants, with peaks of 250 in some markets such as Austria and Switzerland. The strongest annual increase (7%) occurred in patients 64 years and under 1. The knee arthroplasty market until recently solely consisted of standard prosthetic systems, with a limited range of sizes available.

Nvidia and Mercedes-Benz announce AI tech for cars coming in 2024

#artificialintelligence

Nvidia and Mercedes-Benz announced plans on Tuesday for an in-vehicle computing and AI automated driving infrastructure for 2024 vehicles. The companies plan to enter a cooperative agreement that will be multi-year and valued at multiple billions of dollars in scope, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a livestreamed announcement with Mercedes-Benz AG CEO Ola Kallenius. Hundreds of engineers from both companies will be involved. The partnership will create cars that could last 10 to 20 years with constant software updates downloadable from the cloud and paid for by customers over the two decades. The vaunted Mercedes-Benz reputation for styling could mean that a 20-year-old car with constant software updates could become a classic worth more than when it was purchased, Huang said.

Olympus is giving up on cameras

Engadget

Despite denying persistent rumors that it would exit the camera business, Olympus is doing exactly that. The company has announced that will sell its camera business to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), the same company that purchased Sony's VAIO PC division (via The Verge). Olympus will now focus on its much larger business supplying industrial and medical imaging equipment. Olympus said it improved cost structure, focused on high-profit cameras and lenses and took other steps to "cope with the extremely severe digital camera market." Despite those efforts, however, the company said it "recorded operating losses for three consecutive fiscal years up to the term ended in March 2020."

Securly 360 Cloud platform is a complete end-to-end student safety and device management solution that helps students stay safe online and focused on learning. Securly's advanced AI-based filtering technology significantly decreases the likelihood of students viewing inappropriate content while also increasing the awareness schools have into active and potential incidents of cyberbullying, self-harm or violence. While the majority of the educational technology industry approaches student safety by relying on catalogs of keyword searches to alert schools to signs of troubling behavior. This approach results in districts being inundated with false positives, all of which needed to be followed up on to ensure the safety of the students involved.

NVIDIA and Mercedes partner to create a next-gen car computer

Engadget

During a joint press conference held Wednesday, NVIDIA and Mercedes Benz announced that they are teaming up to develop a "revolutionary in-vehicle computing system" for the automakers next generation of luxury automobiles in 2024. Touted as "the most sophisticated and advanced computing architecture ever deployed in an automobile," per an NVIDIA press release, this new software system will enable Level 2 and 3 driving autonomy -- that's on par and exceeding the current abilities of Tesla's Autopilot, respectively -- and Level 4 parking autonomy. That means that the vehicle will be able to, by and large, fit itself into parking stalls without any help from the human driver. There will still need to be a human on hand in case things go catastrophically sideways, but under normal conditions, there won't be much call for them to intercede. What's more, the computing system, which is based on NVIDIA's DRIVE platform, will be able to "automate driving of regular routes from address to address," according to the release.
