Computers that are more intelligent than humans are not only possible, but inevitable and will be here sooner than most people think, according to the new book written by Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert Charles Simon. Will Computers Revolt: Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence predicts that in just a few years, computers will become the dominant intelligence on our planet, ushering in a technological juggernaut that, to some extent, has already begun. To get there, however, Simon argues that AI must be able to develop an understanding of the real world. Noting that most AI programs have been developed to solve specific problems, he contends, "Since they have no real world context, I believe Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – the ability of any intelligent agent to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human can – will necessarily emerge within the context of robotics, which is the only technology based on real-world interactions. Analog AI processor company Mythic launched its M1076 Analog Matrix Processor today to provide low-power AI processing. The company uses analog circuits rather than digital to create its processor, making it easier to integrate memory into the processor and operate its device with 10 times less power than a typical system-on-chip or graphics processing unit (GPU). The M1076 AMP can support up to 25 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of AI compute in a 3-watt power envelope. It is targeted at AI at the edge applications, but the company said it can scale from the edge to server applications, addressing multiple vertical markets including smart cities, industrial applications, enterprise applications, and consumer devices. To address a wider range of designs, the M1076 AMP comes in several form factors: a standalone processor, an ultra-compact PCIe M.2 card, and a PCIe card with up to 16 AMPs.

Australia's Charles Sturt University (CSU) has announced plans to create a "hands-free" smart farm where robots will do all the work -- no human laborers required. The challenge: The majority of the food we eat comes from farms, and as the population grows, so does the amount of food needed to feed it. However, there's a lot of work that needs to be done around a farm, and many farmers are having trouble finding people to do it. Labor shortages have been a chronic problem in farms throughout the developed world. The idea: Robots and AI could help close the labor gap, literally doing the jobs people used to do.
