AI brings automation to seafood industry
JCU's Phoebe Arbon was presented with a Science and Innovation Award for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry last night in Canberra. "I'll use the grant to develop, train and validate an AI model to identify, count and measure abalone from an image. So, very basically, the AI model will learn to predict the weight and size of abalone from images," she said. Ms Arbon said the technology is already in existence but needs specific instructions and application to work within the abalone industry. "Currently, assessing abalone is done manually which can cause harm to the abalone, and costs each farm about $25,000 a year," she said.

Artificial intelligence: MEPs discuss ways to boost EU competitiveness
You can watch the recording of the debate from this link. "The digital revolution will bring with it a reshuffle of the established global order: those who are digitally competitive will stay ahead and become the new'digital superpowers', while those who are not digitally competitive will fall behind, no matter what their relative position is now," said AIDA committee Chair Dragoศ Tudorache (Renew Europe, RO). "Is the EU doing enough to remain competitive on the global stage? Innovation and start-ups are the lifeblood of an economy and of economic growth. We need to work on supporting our start-ups and SMEs and securing a regulatory environment where they can thrive, become unicorns, go global, become tech giants, and compete with the other unicorns and global giants out there. For this, we need to think from their perspective and ensure that their needs are served," he said.
Researchers Enhance Alzheimer's Disease Classification through Artificial Intelligence
For media inquiries, please contact Gina DiGravio: 617-224-8962, ginad@bu.edu Warning signs for Alzheimer's disease (AD) can begin in the brain years before the first symptoms appear. Spotting these clues may allow for lifestyle changes that could possibly delay the disease's destruction of the brain. "Improving the diagnostic accuracy of Alzheimer's disease is an important clinical goal. If we are able to increase the diagnostic accuracy of the models in ways that can leverage existing data such as MRI scans, then that can be hugely beneficial," explained corresponding author Vijaya B. Kolachalama, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM).
