EDRM Announces Publication of "The Use of Artificial Intelligence in eDiscovery"
MINNEAPOLIS, October 18, 2021 – Setting the global standards for e-discovery, the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) is pleased to announce the release of its artificial intelligence (AI) paper titled "The Use of Artificial Intelligence in eDiscovery." Kelly Atherton, senior manager cyber incident response at Norton Rose Fulbright, served as the project trustee. Our drafting team comprised of attorneys, data scientists and legal technologists sought to create an objective, easy to digest overview for the bench and bar to aid them in better understanding the use of AI in e-discovery. "We are inundated in the e-discovery space with broad talk of technologies that will help us perform our work more efficiently and accurately at a lower cost. But what does this all even mean?" asks Atherton. "Our drafting team comprised of attorneys, data scientists and legal technologists sought to create an objective, easy to digest overview for the bench and bar to aid them in better understanding the use of AI in e-discovery. We adopted a broad, working definition of AI for the purpose of this paper and discussed the types of AI used in e-discovery, common uses cases and ethical considerations. Our hope is those new to AI can use this paper as a starting point to become a more informed consumer and adopter of AI in e-discovery."
'A Quiet Place' is being adapted into a video game
No one in their right mind would actually want to live in the world of A Quiet Place, where denizens walk around barefoot and move as silently as possible to avoid incurring the wrath of highly noise-sensitive aliens. But, if you'd like to find out how well you might cope in that universe, you can test your nerves in the franchise's first video game, which is scheduled to arrive next year. Publisher Saber Interactive has announced that a single-player, story-driven horror adventure is in development by iLLOGIKA and EP1T0ME. The iLLOGIKA team includes developers who have worked on the Rainbow Six and Far Cry franchises, and the studio helped with the development of games including Hyper Scape and Cuphead. There aren't many other details about A Quiet Place just yet, such as the platforms on which it will be available.
Amazon announces Alexa program for hospitals and senior care
Amazon has two new programs that integrate Alexa into hospitals and senior living communities, the company announced today. They're run through Alexa Smart Properties, which allows organizations to control a centralized Alexa system. "Early on in the pandemic, hospitals and senior living communities reached out to us and asked us to help them set up Alexa and voice in their communities," Liron Torres, global leader for Alexa Smart Properties, said in an interview with The Verge. Hospitals wanted ways to interact with patients without using protective equipment, and senior living communities wanted to connect residents with family members and staff, she says. The program lets senior living facilities use Amazon Echo devices to send announcements or other messages to residents' rooms.

BrainChip Begins Taking Orders of Akida AI Processor Development Kits

FDA Clears 5-Minute Test for Early Dementia
The US Food and Drug Administration has given marketing clearance to CognICA, an artificial intelligence–powered integrated cognitive assessment for the early detection of dementia. Developed by Cognetivity Neurosciences Ltd, CognICA is a 5-minute, computerized cognitive assessment that is completed using an iPad. The test offers several advantages over traditional pen-and-paper-based cognitive tests, the company said in a news release. "These include its high sensitivity to early-stage cognitive impairment, avoidance of cultural or educational bias and absence of learning effect upon repeat testing," the company notes. Because the test runs on a computer, it can support remote, self-administered testing at scale and is geared toward seamless integration with existing electronic health record systems, they add.

Amazon-owned Zoox to start testing its autonomous vehicles in Seattle
Zoox has been testing its Level-3 (L3) autonomous vehicles in Las Vegas and the Bay Area for four years, way before Amazon acquired the self-driving company in 2020. But to be able to train its technology further, it has to hold trials in other locations with different environmental conditions -- like Seattle. Zoox has announced that it will soon start testing its L3 vehicles in the city to collect data and trial new hardware in the face of frequent rains. "It rains more frequently in Seattle than it does in San Francisco," the company said in its announcement. Zoox built special hardware into its sensors to give its vehicles the capability to automatically remove water and debris when needed.
