Databricks, a company specializing in data lakehouse technology, announced on Tuesday a new platform designed for the manufacturing industry. Called lakehouse for manufacturing, the platform aims to unify data and artificial intelligence (AI) for various analytics use cases such as predictive maintenance, quality control and supply chain optimization. The platform builds on Databricks' core data lakehouse platform, which leverages Delta Lake, Apache Spark and MLFlow, open-source projects that enable scalable data processing and machine learning (ML) workflows. The platform also integrates with model serving, a service that Databricks introduced last month to simplify the deployment and management of ML models in production.

The UK's data regulator has issued a warning to tech companies about protecting personal information when developing and deploying large language, generative AI models. Less than a week after Italy's data privacy regulator banned ChatGPT over alleged privacy violations, the Information Commission's Office (ICO) published a blog post reminding organizations that data protection laws still apply when the personal information being processed comes from publicly accessible sources. "Organisations developing or using generative AI should be considering their data protection obligations from the outset, taking a data protection by design and by default approach," said Stephen Almond, the ICO's director of technology and innovation, in the post. Almond also said that, for organizations processing personal data for the purpose of developing generative AI, there are various questions they should ask themselves, centering on: what their lawful basis for processing personal data is; how they can mitigate security risks; and how they will respond to individual rights requests. "There really can be no excuse for getting the privacy implications of generative AI wrong," Almond said, adding that ChatGPT itself recently told him that "generative AI, like any other technology, has the potential to pose risks to data privacy if not used responsibly."

Time told Americans that the source of a fake mugshot of Trump might come from "online pro-Trump groups," also sharing reputed comments from internet forums. "'Let's make our own version and circulate it!' one person posted on a popular pro-Trump forum. 'No one will know what's real!' Another person posted'If they don't release the mugshot immediately, just stage a mugshot as to not hold up any billboards, t-shirts, posters, or fundraising drives,'" according to the magazine.

However, designing reward functions is complicated and cumbersome, even for domain experts. Automatically inferring a reward function is more desirable for end-users interacting with a system.

In an attempt to open up its technology to a wider audience, enterprise software company Databricks has released Dolly, a large language model and its associated training code under an open-source licence. Despite being based on a much smaller underlying model, the company says it has ChatGPT-like functionality and can be run "in-house". The move was inspired by the success of OpenAI's natural language platform ChatGPT, which became one of the fastest-growing consumer apps within a couple of months of its release in November last year. It has since caused some of the world's largest companies including Microsoft and Google to pivot and release generative and natural language AI tools. "We show that anyone can take a dated off-the-shelf open source LLM and give it magical ChatGPT-like instruction-following ability by training it in 30 minutes on one machine, using high-quality training data," Databricks wrote in a blog post explaining the decision.
