Interview with Zahra Ghorrati: developing frameworks for human activity recognition using wearable sensors

AIHub

In this interview series, we're meeting some of the AAAI/SIGAI Doctoral Consortium participants to find out more about their research. Zahra Ghorrati is developing frameworks for human activity recognition using wearable sensors. We caught up with Zahra to find out more about this research, the aspects she has found most interesting, and her advice for prospective PhD students. Tell us a bit about your PhD - where are you studying, and what is the topic of your research? I am pursuing my PhD at Purdue University, where my dissertation focuses on developing scalable and adaptive deep learning frameworks for human activity recognition (HAR) using wearable sensors.

First provide a summary of the paper, and then address the following criteria: Quality, clarity, originality and significance. Thanks to your rebuttal, I think I now understand your algorithm, and I think it is correct. But why did you present in Figure 2 algorithm 2 with CB and not TCB? The algorithm with CB does not work, and it is misleading to put CB in Figure 2. I would recommend changing this and putting TCB in the presentation of your algorithm. Also, please comment on the necessity of knowing L(u_1,...,u_n) (or rather an upper bound on this, and rewrite the Thm with an upper bound since it is not realistic to have truly this quantity available).

Neural Information Processing Systems

First provide a summary of the paper, and then address the following criteria: Quality, clarity, originality and significance. Summary: The authors re-explain regularization in optimization problems as a constraint of the type the parameters ${\bf w}$ must belong to the convex set $O$ where the convex set O is obtained as the convex hull of all the points of the form $g.v$ where $v$ is some fix vector, $g$ an element from a group and $.$ is a (linear) group action of element $g$ on vector $v$. More concretely, their main contributions are as follows. For example, the ball associated to the L1 norm can be explained as the convex hull of the points obtained by flipping the sign and permuting the components of the vector $(1,0,0,..,0)$; (B) they show that given a seed $v$ and a group action associated to a group $G$, the notion of $w$ is a member of the convex set $O_G(v)$ can be seen as $v$ is smaller than $w$ under a pre-order; (C) they show that if $-v$ belongs to convex set $O$ then $O$ can be seen as the ball of an atomic norm (as defined in Chandra et al.); (D) they show that the L1-sorted norm equals the dual of the norm associated to the signed-pertumation orbitope; (E) they show how to reinterpret the main steps of conditional and projected gradient algorithms in the language of orbitopes and give a procedure to compute projections onto orbitopes. Quality: There are no technical mistakes in the paper.

SIEVE: Towards Verifiable Certification for Code-datasets

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Code agents and empirical software engineering rely on public code datasets, yet these datasets lack verifiable quality guarantees. Static 'dataset cards' inform, but they are neither auditable nor do they offer statistical guarantees, making it difficult to attest to dataset quality. Teams build isolated, ad-hoc cleaning pipelines. This fragments effort and raises cost. We present SIEVE, a community-driven framework. It turns per-property checks into Confidence Cards-machine-readable, verifiable certificates with anytime-valid statistical bounds. We outline a research plan to bring SIEVE to maturity, replacing narrative cards with anytime-verifiable certification. This shift is expected to lower quality-assurance costs and increase trust in code-datasets.

Thousands of Americans can't get new jobs as government shutdown directly hits citizens

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Overall, federal records revealed that over 2.7 million background checks are conducted every month for various reasons, including job applications. This also means air travel will likely suffer this month because the FAA Pilot Record Database is delayed and new pilots cannot start flights. FBI criminal checks, as well as civil court record searches, are needed for nurses, aides, and therapists, to slow hospital onboarding. 'Shutdowns cause delays in court record updates and verification gaps, slowing credentialing and risking non-compliance with HIPAA or state mandates,' the cyber expert explained. Trucking and shipping companies will also feel the impact of the shutdown because commercial drivers must undergo mandated checks by the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP), which depend on federal IT updates and audits.
