Our Inevitable Future: A Conversation With Kevin Kelly About VR, Digital Socialism, And His New Book

#artificialintelligence

If you're a virtual reality enthusiast, you probably read Kevin Kelly's April Wired cover story on Magic Leap, "The World's Most Secretive Startup." Kelly is one of the few people who've seen the much-hyped mixed reality technology being produced by the Fort Lauderdale company and was suitably impressed by it. "While Magic Leap has yet to achieve the immersion of The Void," he wrote (referring to the Utah-based immersive experience company), "it is still, by far, the most impressive on the visual front -- the best at creating the illusion that virtual objects truly exist." As the co-founder of Wired, publisher of the Cool Tools website, and former publisher and editor of The Whole Earth Review, Kelly has always been prescient about these things. In his new book, The Inevitable: Understanding 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our Future, he compellingly outlines a set of behaviors and trends that will change the way we live. We recently spoke with Kelly about the themes of the book, and of course, the latest developments in VR. There Is Only R: The first question I have to ask: what do you think of the Pokemon Go phenomenon? Given what you've written about the VR and AR, what's your take on it? Kevin Kelly: I think it's just wonderfully thrilling to see -- I think perhaps the only unexpected thing about it is its apparent suddenness.

Gabriele Amorth, prominent Roman Catholic exorcist, dies at 91

Los Angeles Times

Father Gabriele Amorth, a prominent Roman Catholic exorcist, has died after a long illness, an Italian care facility said Saturday. Santa Lucia Foundation, a Rome rehabilitation center, said Saturday that Amorth died a day earlier in another Rome hospital, where he was recently transferred after his health worsened. Foundation officials said he had suffered from various respiratory and circulatory problems. Exorcism in the Catholic Church received more attention after Pope John Paul II repeatedly sought to convince skeptics the devil was very much active in the world. During his papacy, the Vatican issued guidelines for driving out devils and stressed the power of evil.

Racing family stunned after 'Baja' Bob Gordon and his wife are found dead in apparent murder-suicide

Los Angeles Times

Ryan Hunter-Reay said this week has brought a full range of emotions, with the birth of his third son coming only hours before he learned that his father-in-law was dead in an apparent murder-suicide. The former Indianapolis 500 winner is married to Beccy Gordon, and the couple welcomed son Rhodes Maverick Hunter-Reay on Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Not long afterward, they were informed that her father, former racer "Baja" Bob Gordon, had been found dead alongside his wife in their Orange home. Police said Bob Gordon died of a gunshot wound and Sharon Gordon was strangled. Hunter-Reay said the Gordon family wanted him to proceed to Sonoma Raceway in Northern California, where IndyCar concludes its season Sunday.

The next big thing in legal: carthorse to racehorse artificial intelligence : Robotics Law Journal

#artificialintelligence

Chrissie Lightfoot takes a detailed look at how AI is used by law firms and what is on the horizon. As a futurist, an entrepreneur, and a lawyer, I always get asked, 'What do you think is the next big thing in the legal world?' I always begin my response with a catch-all reply: 'The next big thing is anything that helps you attract and keep a client. No client equals no business. A bit of a clichรฉ, I know.

Deep Learning Reading Group: Deep Compression

#artificialintelligence

The next paper from our reading group is by Song Han, Huizi Mao, and William J. Dally. It won the best paper award at ICLR 2016. It details three methods of compressing a neural network in order to reduce the size of the network on disk, improve performance, and decrease run time. Pre-trained convolutional neural networks are too large for mobile devices: AlexNet is 240 MB and VGG-16 is over 552 MB. This seems small when compared to a music library or large video, but the difference is that the networks reside in memory when running.

AI Industry Leader, SparkCognition, Named Finalist for Two AIconics Aw

#artificialintelligence

SparkCognition, the world's first cognitive security analytics company, has been named a finalist for the AIconics Awards, in two categories. The AIconics are the world's only independently-judged awards celebrating the drive, innovation and hard work in the international Artificial Intelligence Community, with the winners announced exclusively at The AI Summit, September 28 in San Francisco. SparkCognition develops cutting-edge machine learning that models physical and virtual assets, continuously learns from data, and derives intelligent insights to secure and protect infrastructure round the clock. The company's technology is capable of harnessing real time sensor data and learning from it continuously, allowing for more accurate risk mitigation and prevention policies to intervene and avert disasters. At The AI Summit European flagship in London back in May, AI Business received a huge number of AIconics entries across the AI technology vendor spectrum active in the UK and Europeโ€“ from the freshest startups all the way through to longstanding innovators such as IAG, DRYiCE, BY HCL Technologies and Artificial Solutions.

He was deported 4 times. His wife is accused of helping him flee to Mexico. Now, she faces 10 years in prison

Los Angeles Times

Immigration officials have deported Jose Vega-Zuniga four times, but he's always returned, and usually landed behind bars. But a recent DUI arrest culminated in a federal conviction this summer that carried up to 20 years in prison. So, prosecutors allege, he left of his own accord. Days after a federal judge issued a warrant for his arrest, Vega-Zuniga, 38, crossed the border near San Diego, sitting in the front passenger seat as his wife drove her pickup into Mexico, prosecutors said. On Wednesday, nearly a month after the brazen escape, federal authorities arrested his wife, Elba Soto, at her Moreno Valley home, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.
