I brought my husband back for his funeral as a hologram
When Pam Cronrath's husband Bill died last year, after nearly 60 years of marriage, she knew what she wanted to do, but not exactly how. I promised him a super wake, she told the BBC. What she didn't expect was that keeping the promise would lead her into the world of holograms, technology more commonly associated with celebrities than memorial services in rural America. A self-confessed tech enthusiast, she says her outlook was shaped by a career that stretched back to the early days of the internet. Several years ago, while speaking at a medical conference, she watched a doctor appear as a full-body hologram broadcast live across the United States.
Appendix of Learning to Break the Loop Analyzing and Mitigating Repetitions for Neural Text Generation
Previous work [2, 1] has observed that standard training and greedy decoding usually cause models to generate consecutive repetitive texts. These consecutive repetitive texts are redundant and do not convey new information, which is avoided in human language. There are three types of consecutive repetitions: word-level, phrase-level and sentence-level. The phrase-level means that a phrase consisting of several words is repeated consecutively. The sentence in our paper refers to a sequence split by '.!?' is repeated consecutively 2. We calculate the ratio of consecutive repetition in a sequence x as follows.
Interview with Deepika Vemuri: interpretability and concept-based learning
The latest interview in our series with the AAAI/SIGAI Doctoral Consortium participants features Deepika Vemuri who is working on interpretability and concept-based learning. We found out more about the two aspects of concept-based models that she's been researching. Could you tell us a bit about your PhD - where are you studying, and what is the topic of your research? I'm a PhD student from IIT Hyderabad working with Dr Vineeth N Balasubramanian, supported by the PMRF Fellowship. Most current state-of-the-art models are black boxes, which is especially problematic when these models are used in high-stakes applications like criminal justice and healthcare, where people's lives depend on the decisions of these models.

Can you spot the fake? Take the test to see if you can distinguish between real and AI-generated VOICES
In the past, voice assistants like Siri or the one in your satnav used so-called'synthetic voices'. These require voice actors to spend hours in the recording studio, meticulously sampling all the different words and phrases that the assistant might need. Voice clones, on the other hand, have revolutionised how synthetic voices are created, by using AI to digitally recreate someone's speech patterns. These clones can be created with as little as a few seconds of recorded audio, even using clips from social media or snippets of conversation as the raw material. This has sparked concerns that criminals using AI could easily impersonate friends, family, or co-workers to manipulate their targets . According to the National Trading Standards, criminals are already using AI to clone people's voices and set up unauthorised direct debits over the phone. In the study, the researchers created voice clones of human participants using just 120 pre-recorded sentences. Participants listened to 80 unique sentences - 40 spoken by a real person and 40 spoken by an AI voice clone. The researchers compared human (top) AI-generated (bottom) voice recordings to see why this might be the case, but couldn't find any clear explanation Can you tell which voices are AI?
