Your guide to the California state controller race: Democrat Malia Cohen faces challengers
Things to Do in L.A. From left, Meghann Adams, Malia Cohen and Herb Morgan are running for state controller in the California primary election. California voters will choose who oversees the state's finances as incumbent Malia Cohen faces Republican Herb Morgan, a finance executive, and Meghann Adams, a school bus driver and Peace and Freedom Party member. Morgan proposes using blockchain and AI technology for real-time spending transparency, while Adams advocates corporate audits and redirecting billions toward education, housing and healthcare for working-class Californians. Cohen improved financial report timeliness but fell short on promised audits of homelessness programs, the DMV and Employment Development Department. The state's fiscal watchdog oversees the intake and outtake of public funds and audits departments across the state.
Scientists Are Starting to Unlock the Nanoscale Secrets of the Immune System
At WIRED Health, immunologist Daniel Davis detailed the ways in which new technologies are enabling a better understanding of the human immune system. The immune system operates at a scale scientists are only just beginning to be able to see. That new view could change how diseases like cancer are tackled. Speaking at WIRED Health on April 16, Daniel Davis, an immunologist at Imperial College London, detailed how researchers are using advanced microscopes to uncover previously invisible dynamics in the human immune system, showing that there are multiple processes happening on a "nanoscale" that was previously out of reach. That new view is already reshaping how immunity is understood.

Ethical Considerations for Responsible Data Curation
HCCV datasets constructed through nonconsensual web scraping lack crucial metadata for comprehensive fairness and robustness evaluations. Current remedies are post hoc, lack persuasive justification for adoption, or fail to provide proper contextualization for appropriate application. Our research focuses on proactive, domain-specific recommendations, covering purpose, privacy and consent, and diversity, for curating HCCV evaluation datasets, addressing privacy and bias concerns. We adopt an ante hoc reflective perspective, drawing from current practices, guidelines, dataset withdrawals, and audits, to inform our considerations and recommendations.

Unlimiformer: Long-Range Transformers with Unlimited Length Input
Since the proposal of transformers (Vaswani et al., 2017), these models have been limited to bounded input lengths, because of their need to attend to every token in the input. In this work, we propose Unlimiformer: a general approach that wraps any existing pretrained encoder-decoder transformer, and offloads the cross-attention computation to a single k-nearest-neighbor (kNN) index, while the returned kNN distances are the attention dot-product scores. This kNN index can be kept on either the GPU or CPU memory and queried in sub-linear time; this way, we can index practically unlimited input sequences, while every attention head in every decoder layer retrieves its top-k keys, instead of attending to every key. We evaluate Unlimiformer on several long-document and book-summarization benchmarks, showing that it can process even 500k token-long inputs from the BookSum dataset, without any input truncation at test time. We demonstrate that Unlimiformer improves pretrained models such as BART (Lewis et al., 2020a) and Longformer (Beltagy et al., 2020) by extending them to unlimited inputs without additional learned weights and without modifying their code. Our code and models are publicly available, and support LLaMA-2 as well2.
Maryna Viazovska's proofs of sphere packing formalized with AI
The proofs that earned EPFL professor Maryna Viazovska the Fields Medal in 2022 have reached a new milestone: their complete formalization by computer, achieved through a collaboration between mathematicians and artificial intelligence tools. In 2016, Maryna Viazovska solved the sphere packing problem in dimension 8, proving that the E lattice constitutes the densest possible arrangement. Shortly after, together with collaborators, she established an analogous result in dimension 24 using the Leech lattice. Her method provided an elegant solution to a problem studied for centuries, with close ties to applied fields such as error-correcting codes. For this major contribution, Viazovska was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022, the highest distinction in mathematics.
Why playing is no laughing matter for otters

From by Heide Island, PhD, to be published on 4/28/26 by Avery, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House, LLC. From behind a stand of frozen lupine, Patches, Crest, and Slash emerge onto the wetland. Moonshine reflects off the newly fallen snow, illuminating the predawn hour with a supernatural brightness. They halt beside a corrugated metal culvert, side by side, until Patches lurches forward and leaps onto the bank of Admirals Lake. Her landing fractures the frozen lakeshore, stamping an otter-sized divot. The two girls follow behind her, each landing with a loud crunch, leaving star-shaped bull's-eyes in the ice. The otters are out early, exploiting the cold; an icy lake makes for sluggish fish.
