Sex, Love, and Reproduction in the Age of Technology (Dec 6 & Dec 7)

#artificialintelligence

Event Description: In in our "cyber" age how do we do sex, love and reproduction? This seminar is an interdisciplinary dialogue among psychoanalysts, critical and cultural thinkers, writers and those interested in how our age of technology, consumer (re)production, including pornography, and mass social media has affected what psychoanalysts call "the subject," which is how each and every one of us is uniquely human. The seminar takes place over 2 days, commencing on Friday evening with a panel of invited speakers who will give short presentations, followed by audience discussion. The seminar continues on Saturday morning with the invited keynote speaker, Isabel Millar (see talk and bio below). This is followed by a roundtable discussion with the Friday evening panellists and the invited speaker, and the seminar will conclude with an audience Q&A session.

Canada refuses visas to African AI researchers

#artificialintelligence

For the second year in a row, Canada has refused visas to dozens of researchers - most of them from Africa - who were hoping to attend an artificial intelligence (AI) conference in Vancouver. The hassles have caused at least one other AI conference to choose a different country for their next event. The Neural Information Processing Systems conference (NeurIPS), which brings together thousands of experts and researchers from all over the world, will be held in Vancouver next month. Last week, NeurIPS began hearing that several attendees had had their visas denied. It was the second year in a row the conference has had visa troubles.

John Carmack, CTO of Oculus and recent recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in VR, is scaling back his duties at Oculus. In a Facebook post, he states that he will become a'Consultant CTO' for Oculus while pursuing a much more ambitious goal: Artificial General Intelligence. In other words, technical genius John Carmack, who revolutionised video games and then VR, is now going to help bring about human-like, or even human-surpassing, AI. While a radical shift in focus like this may seem out of the blue, there have been hints recently that Carmack isn't as engaged by VR as he once was. In his recipients' speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's VR Awards, he talked about how he felt VR wasn't advancing quickly enough for him to feel satisfied.

From Microbiology to Machine Learning with Springboard

#artificialintelligence

Microbiology and MBA grad JK started to learn about big data and machine learning in his job, but wanted to learn more about data science in a structured environment. He enrolled in Springboard's Machine Learning Career Track to learn about ML and AI online. JK tells us how he balanced his full-time job with the Springboard bootcamp (hint: he didn't sleep much), and how networking at conferences helped him land his new job as a Data Engineer at KPMG! What is your educational and career background? I didn't come from a computer science (CS) background. My undergrad was in microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics. I then completed an MBA with a concentration in Accounting and Finance, working at the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea. And that's where I got a taste of some CS database work.
