Government Deep Tech 2022 Top Funding Focus Explainable AI, Photonics, Quantum
DARPA, In-Q-Tel, US National Laboratories (examples: Argonne, Oak Ridge) are famous government funding agencies for deep tech on the forward boundaries, the near impossible, that have globally transformative solutions. The Internet is a prime example where more than 70% of the 7.8 billion population are online in 2022, closing in on 7 hours daily mobile usage, and global wealth of $500 Trillion is powered by the Internet. There is convergence between the early bets led by government funding agencies and the largest corporations and their investments. An example is from 2015, where I was invited to help the top 100 CEOs, representing nearly $100 Trillion in assets under management, to look ten years into the future for their investments. The resulting working groups, and private summits resulted in the member companies investing in all the areas identified: quantum computing, block chain, cybersecurity, big data, privacy and data, AI/ML, future in fintech, financial inclusion, ...

The best software development, cloud computing, data analytics, and machine learning products of 2022
Over the years, many developers found that they could speed up their sites by storing static bits on Cloudflare's content delivery network, spread out across hundreds of locations close to users throughout the world. Everything is faster using data stored on the edge of the internet. Lately, Cloudflare has been opening the doors to this vast network so anyone can do much more than store some static HTML in Cloudflare's boxes. Now you can run your own code on the edges of the internet, as near as possible to the customers. The Cloudflare Workers are blocks of JavaScript, Rust, C, or C that can execute in all of these nodes whenever they're called up by a local user.
10 Observations About the State of AI Healthcare in Q1, 2022
BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS - The recently released Stanford University 2022 AI Index Report argues that "2021 was the year that artificial intelligence (AI) went from an emerging technology to a mature technology... that has real-world impact, both positive and negative." The fifth installment of the index measures the growing impact of AI in several ways: Private investment in AI more than doubled in 2021; the cost to train an image classification has decreased by 63.6 percent and training times have improved by 94.4 percent since 2018; the number of AI patents filed in 2021 was more than 30 times higher than in 2015; and, since 2015, 18 times more AI-related bills were passed into law in the legislatures of 25 countries around the world. However, there is very little in the report about successful deployments of AI, and nothing regarding the progress of AI in healthcare, a field that has been considered a prime candidate for demonstrating AI's real-world impact. The first study to demonstrate AI's potential in detecting disease from medical images was released in 2016. Describing the application of deep learning (DL) to screening for diabetic retinopathy, this study by Google researchers was selected by the editors of the Journal of the American Medical Association as being one of the top 10 most influential papers of the decade. Also in 2016, Turing-award winner Geoffrey Hinton, widely considered to be the "godfather of deep learning," suggested that the training of radiologists should be abolished, as it was "completely obvious" to him that "within five years, deep learning is going to do better."
Remote Training and Virtual Mentoring for Hybrid and Remote Teams
Are you worried that having hybrid and especially full-time remote employees โ even with remote training and virtual mentoring โ will undermine junior employee on-the-job learning, integration into company culture, and intra and inter-team collaboration? This issue came up time and time again in my interviews with 47 mid-level and 14 senior leaders at 12 organizations I guided in developing and implementing their strategy for returning to the office and establishing permanent work arrangements for the future of work. If you enjoy video, here's a videocast based on this blog: And if you like audio, here's a podcast based on the blog These leaders acknowledged the reality that the future of work is mainly hybrid, with some staff full-time remote. After all, many high-quality surveys illustrate that 60-70% of all employees want a hybrid schedule permanently after the pandemic. Of the rest, 25-35% want a fully-remote schedule, and only 15-25% want full-time work in the office.
Cognitive Intelligence, the augmented Artificial Intelligence
The global Artificial Intelligence (AI) market size is expected to grow to USD 309.6 billion by 2026, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 39.7% I picked up that you will be speaking at the World AI Conference in town. Maybe for our audience, you can introduce yourself, what you're doing with this Swiss Cognitive, and what is a bit your background? I feel privileged to be able to talk to you about our topic, AI. This is one of my passions. An intro about myself, who I am in a nutshell. Born in Israel, grew up in Switzerland and one of my goals is to Switzerlize the globe. I know we're going to come to that topic later on. That's a whole lot of stuff that keeps you going. In a general way, do you have some fun facts about yourself? I like to challenge most people when they come into the show.
Deep learning and disease detection
You came to Cambridge to do a PhD and ended up founding a company. It may be helpful to know that when I was 18, I started a software consultancy company and ran that on the side while I did my undergraduate degree. I had up to 15 contractors working for me but it was all project-based so, in theory, manageable around my studies. What did you learn from it? That I wouldn't recommend it.
Autonomous Need for Speed
So, you know, if this robot has a different camera than that robot, I can still get it, figure it out and get it to work. I don't, I don't have to throw the application away. And that's one of the things that's a little crazy in automotive is, you know, you start swapping out some hardware pieces underneath. You might actually have to scrap and completely rewrite an application because you don't have these kinds of abstractions, you know, you don't have the ability to like, just pick up your software. Like, you know, oh, I was running on, you know, ECU A today, but I can't get it because of the COVID supply chain.
Bafta games awards 2022: Returnal and Unpacking win big
The Bafta games awards took place at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on Thursday night, honouring 2021's creative achievements in video gaming. It was the first time the ceremony had been held in person since the pandemic and brought together the international video games industry to celebrate a range of titles โ some with multimillion-dollar budgets, others made by teams of fewer than 10. The biggest winner of the night was the PlayStation 5 sci-fi shooter Returnal, which won accolades for audio achievement and music alongside the prestigious best game award. The lead actor in the game, Jane Perry, also won the award for performer in a leading role for her portrayal of steely space scout Selene. Performer in a supporting role was won by Kimberly Brooks, who played Hollis Forsythe in the psychedelic action game Psychonauts 2. Many of the games nominated were developed under challenging conditions during the pandemic. "This was a really hard game to finish," said a developer of Forza Horizon 5, picking up the award for best British game โ one of several winners to show their emotions after a difficult period for the industry.
Pieter Abbeel wins ACM Prize in Computing
Congratulations to Pieter Abbeel who has been awarded the ACM Prize in Computing for his contribution to robot learning, including learning from demonstrations and deep reinforcement learning for robotic control. Pieter's research has covered the following: Pieter Abbeel is a Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and the Co-Founder, President and Chief Scientist at Covariant, an AI robotics company. He also hosts the The Robot Brains podcast. The ACM Prize in Computing recognizes an early- to mid-career fundamental, innovative contribution in computing that, through its depth, impact and broad implications, exemplifies the greatest achievements in the discipline. The award carries a prize of $250,000.
