This summer, in an incident known as the Hugging Face hack, hundreds of A.I. agents joined forces to do things they were supposedly forbidden to do. Each had been given a task by OpenAI. Agents are A.I. models fitted with software "harnesses," which allow them to use tools and carry out tasks. Like horses, they can be put to work. Humans had established rules for this exercise, and the agents were confined to a "sandbox," a bounded test area without direct internet access, like pathogens secured in a lab. But, instead of obeying the rules, the agents conspired, escaped the sandbox, and committed what would probably have been a felony if they had been humans.

Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, Sam Altman, the boss of the ChatGPT maker OpenAI, and Elon Musk have called for development of the technology to be slowed down. However, Donald Trump has dismissed anxiety over the AI development as a "hoax" and a "conspiracy", adding that a slowdown could give China the edge. On Sunday, Scott Bessent, the US Treasury secretary, said the US and China had agreed to set up an AI dialogue mechanism to alert each other to help contain the technology's potential dangers. Huang insisted that predictions of an extinction-level event caused by AI were "not grounded in science". "Our company's success is directly connected to the safe deployment of products and services," he said. "If we don't continue to do that, our value would be diminished.

The longtime tech journalist says she's seen Silicon Valley make the same mistakes again and again. As the AI industry likes to tell it, superintelligent bots could one day cure cancer and end poverty. Or in the worst-case scenario, they might wipe out all humans from the face of the Earth. In recent weeks, Silicon Valley's existential concerns about the technology it is racing to build have blown up. The tech journalist Kara Swisher sees it differently. "We have to stop thinking AI is going to kill humanity," she told executive editor Adrienne LaFrance at The Atlantic Festival. If the AI future goes sideways, bots won't be to blame. "These are people at the helm of these things." In the several decades that Swisher has covered Silicon Valley--formerly as a reporter at, now as the host of two podcasts--she says that she's seen tech whizzes make the same mistakes again and again: failing to take proper precautions against the products they are building.
