Six keys to unlocking upskilling at scale
These elements have a diverse heritage in learning and management theory, and the way they are implemented will vary from one organization to another. Most or all of them are present, we believe, in every successful effort to raise the caliber of digital skills in an organization. When an initiative is designed effectively, the elements complement one another. Together, these elements create an immersive workplace environment that makes it easy to build new habits and learn new skills, continually reminding people of the progress they've made and the learning yet to come. Just as learning a new language is easier if you move to a community where it is constantly spoken, learning digital proficiency is easier if you are surrounded by other people who are fluent with the relevant technologies. But such widespread fluency is not the situation in businesses today. Training Industry, an organization and information source devoted to "the business of learning," estimates that organizations spent more than $362 billion on employee training and education in 2018 alone, reflecting a growth rate of 1.2 percent per year. Yet as Harvard Business School professor Michael Beer had already pointed out in 2016 in Harvard Business Review, organizations "are not getting a good return on their investment.
A Spatiotemporal Epidemic Model to Quantify the Effects of Contact Tracing, Testing, and Containment
Lorch, Lars, Trouleau, William, Tsirtsis, Stratis, Szanto, Aron, Schölkopf, Bernhard, Gomez-Rodriguez, Manuel
Motivated by the current COVID-19 outbreak, we introduce a novel epidemic model based on marked temporal point processes that is specifically designed to make fine-grained spatiotemporal predictions about the course of the disease in a population. Our model can make use and benefit from data gathered by a variety of contact tracing technologies and it can quantify the effects that different testing and tracing strategies, social distancing measures, and business restrictions may have on the course of the disease. Building on our model, we use Bayesian optimization to estimate the risk of exposure of each individual at the sites they visit, the percentage of symptomatic individuals, and the difference in transmission rate between asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals from historical longitudinal testing data. Experiments using real COVID-19 data and mobility patterns from T\"{u}bingen, a town in the southwest of Germany, demonstrate that our model can be used to quantify the effects of tracing, testing, and containment strategies at an unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution. To facilitate research and informed policy-making, particularly in the context of the current COVID-19 outbreak, we are releasing an open-source implementation of our framework at https://github.com/covid19-model.
Lovo launches AI 'voice-over' platform that creates realistic human voices
Lovo, Inc., an AI voice-over platform developed by a team of AI and machine experts from the Univerity of California-Berkeley, has launched what the company describes as "a human-like voice-over platform" designed for education, marketing, entertainment, and other audio content. The company is presently targeting its Lovo Studio platform for businesses, governments, and other entities, "given the current need for'distance narration' during this period of social distancing" in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. "LOVO Studio provides many options for getting voice-over projects done during these tough times of working remotely, creating marketing videos, educational materials, corporate videos, and other voice-over projects," which have "been very difficult" with so many governments and business offices shuttered, the company emphasized in its announcement. The company said its new Lovo Studio is a sophisticated and easy-to-use platform using AI to … recreate a human voice with emotion and tone gradations which make either cloned or synthesized voices sound very realistic." With the "emotional range and realistic vocal characteristics" that are available, the company said Lovo Studio's "cloned voices are practically indistinguishable from the original voice." The "platform also provides more than 50 other voices, both computer-created and human, from which to choose for any voice work without needing a studio or expensive equipment." A recent graduate from the Fall 2019 UC Berkeley SkyDeck accelerator group, Lovo Studio, generates "a realistic-sounding voice'clone' with only five minutes of a target voice clip," which "during a time of social distancing … makes it very fast and easy to generate online learning materials or voice-overs for remote production projects." "You can hide your emotions behind words, but you can't hide it in your voice.

Intel and Udacity announce edge AI nanodegree program for developers
Intel and Udacity announced that their Intel Edge AI for IoT Developer Nanodegree program is open for enrollment. The collaboration, announced on Thursday, aims to train developers in deep learning and computer vision to help facilitate the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge. "We didn't build this program just for hobbyists; we built this for practitioners," said Alper Tekin, CPO at Udacity. "At the end of these courses, you have to write actual code that works in a production environment." Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing were areas Udacity had its sights set on because of the technology's popularity, as well as the skills gap that exists in the field.
Could a Robot Create Your Content?
They are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and are automating a lot of things in our lives. They help us buy books, find love through online dating, and can even be our virtual assistants. Will there be a point where digital devices takes over most of our tasks? Can our humanity be automated? Consider that the "human vs. machine" relationship is a symbiotic process: The computer and the human need each other to make each other better.

These tasks are pretty trivial compared to what we think of AIs doing - playing chess and Go, driving cars, and beating video games at a superhuman level. Reinforcement learning has recently become popular for doing all of that and more. Much like deep learning, a lot of the theory was discovered in the 70s and 80s but it hasn't been until recently that we've been able to observe first hand the amazing results that are possible. In 2016 we saw Google's AlphaGo beat the world Champion in Go.
