Woodgrove Bank, who provides payment processing services for commerce, is looking to design and implement a proof-of-concept (PoC) of an innovative fraud detection solution. They want to provide new services to their merchant customers, helping them save costs by applying machine learning and advanced analytics to detect fraudulent transactions. Their customers are around the world, and the right solutions for them would minimize any latencies experienced using their service by distributing as much of the solution as possible, as closely as possible, to the regions in which their customers use the service. In this workshop, you will learn to design a data pipeline solution that leverages Cosmos DB for both the scalable ingest of streaming data, and the globally distributed serving of both pre-scored data and machine learning models. The solution leverages the Cosmos DB change data feed in concert with the Azure Databricks Delta to enable a modern data warehouse solution that can be used to create risk reduction solutions for scoring transactions for fraud in an offline, batch approach and in a near real-time, request/response approach.

The needs of the society, individuals, and industries are fulfilled with intelligent systems that sense their environment, make proactive decisions on actions advancing their goals, and perform the actions on the environment. We emphasize artificial intelligence, feedback loops, human acceptance and control, intelligent use of basic resources, performance parameters, mission-oriented interdisciplinary research, and a holistic systems view complementing the conventional analytical reductive view as a research paradigm especially for complex problems. To serve a broad audience, we explain these concepts and list the essential literature. We suggest planning research and education by specifying, in a step-wise manner, scenarios, performance criteria, system models, research problems and education content, resulting in common goals and a coherent project portfolio as well as education curricula. Research and education produce feedback to support evolutionary development and encourage creativity in research. Finally, we propose concrete actions for realizing this approach.

I started in Data Science back in 2015. It was not an intended move but the answer to the needs of my employer. I was working for a company providing automation services to Spanish corporations and we had the need to leverage data to automate complex tasks whose rules could not be easily hard-coded. I had recently graduated as an engineer in the middle of a terrible economic crisis, had some statistical modeling knowledge and was proficient using MATLAB. In 2015 there was not specialized Data Science degrees or boot-camps to jump-start in the field (at least, in Spain) and the naturally closest studies you could have were, in this order: Mathematics (in Spain with a strong focus in becoming a teacher/professor in the public education system) or Software Engineer (most of them more interested in App Development or creating the new Uber of "X" than in boring Data Science stuff back then).

My book chapter shows in a tutorial way how to use machine learning to assist quantum chemistry research. The chapter – available for free download till November 6 – is a part of the book edited by Kenneth Ruud and Erkki J. Brändas. It collects a dozen of contributions to the 10th Triennial Congress of the International Society for Theoretical Chemical Physics (ISTCP-X). This was a huge congress with 500 participants. It was held in pre-COVID-19 times in Tromsø, Norway, where the sun never set below the horizon at that time of the year. The team of the organizers led by Kenneth Ruud did really amazing job to bring together forefront science in chemical physics.
