Noemi Derzsy is a Senior Inventive Scientist at AT&T Labs Research within the Data Science and AI Research organization, doing lots of science with lots of data. Previously, she was a Data Science Fellow at Insight Data Science NYC and a postdoctoral research associate at Social Cognitive Networks Academic Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Holding a PhD in Physics and research background in Network Science and Computer Science, her interests revolve around the study of complex systems and complex networks through real-world data. She is also a NASA Datanaut and the co-organizer of Women in Machine Learning and Data Science NYC meetup group. In her free time she develops online technical courses as course instructor for Pearson and DataCamp.

What are the competencies of a good leader? Great leaders can achieve unprecedented results and pave a company's path to the highest achievements. However, leadership alone cannot do much. Leadership has to be translated and broadcasted to stakeholders via efficient and thoroughly defined communication. Therefore effective leadership is all about communicating effectively.

Since completing my Masters in Data Science, I have had a number of people contact me asking for my experience with the course and whether it is worth recommending. Therefore, I thought it best to summarise my decision for starting the course, what I have achieved during my studies, and the outcome in the years following. It was the spring of 2016 and I was coming towards the end of a 6 month internship at one of the largest consulting firms in the City of London. I had taken this role to gain experience and figure out whether becoming an Actuary was the correct route for my career. I quickly found passion in the data analytics of the role as I was being pulled into meetings to discuss numbers I had crunched or was able hack together a tool to automate previously manual tasks.

Many methods exist for function optimization, such as randomly sampling the variable search space, called random search, or systematically evaluating samples in a grid across the search space, called grid search. More principled methods are able to learn from sampling the space so that future samples are directed toward the parts of the search space that are most likely to contain the extrema. Python leads as a top machine learning solution – thanks largely to its extensive battery of powerful open source machine learning libraries. Python provides a great way for machine learning newcomers to begin their hands-on practice, or for experienced practitioners to augment their growing battery of tools. Python's popularity has recently grown even further since it is the most common way to access leading deep learning solutions such as TensorFlow. Note that this workshop day does not cover deep learning, since it serves first-time users by covering a broader, foundational range of traditional machine learning methods. However, this training does provide helpful groundwork for the "Hands-On Deep Learning in the Cloud" workshop scheduled for later in the same week.

Over the past year, companies unable to properly embrace digital technologies lost 15% in foregone annual revenue, a study from Accenture finds. Looking forward, lagging-technology companies stand to potentially miss out on 46% in revenue gains over the next three to four years. This is one of the takeaways from a study based on data from 8,300 organizations, published by Accenture, which sought to document the financial impact of technology adoption. The study finds that leaders grow revenue at more than twice the rate of laggards – tech-savvy organizations grew at a rate of none percent over the past three years, compared to 4% for laggards. The survey's authors--Bhaskar Ghosh, Adam Burden and James Wilson, all with Accenture--add that it's not just about installing the latest systems and gadgets, but also about mindsets and behaviors.
