The Effect of Mobile Platforms on Twitter Content Generation

The increased popularity of feature-rich mobile devices in recent years has enabled widespread consumption and production of social media content via mobile devices. Because mobile devices and mobile applications change context within which an individual generates and consumes microblog content, we might expect microblogging behavior to differ depending on whether the user is using a mobile device. To our knowledge, little has been established about what, if any, effects such mobile interfaces have on microblogging. In this paper, we investigate this question within the context of Twitter, among the most popular microblogging platforms. This work makes three specific contributions. First, we quantify the ways in which user profiles are effected by the mobile context: (1) the extent to which users tend to be either fully non-mobile or mobile and (2) the relative activity of the mobile Twitter community. Second, we assess the differences in content between mobile and non-mobile tweets (posts to the Twitter platform). Our results show that mobile platforms produce very different patterns of Twitter usage. As part of our analysis, we propose and apply a classification system for tweets. We consider this to be the third contribution of this work. While other classification systems have been proposed, ours is the first to permit the independent encoding of a tweet’s form, content, and intended audience. In this paper we apply this system to show how tweets differ between mobile and non-mobile contexts. However, because of its flexibility and breadth, the schema may be useful to researchers studying Twitter content in other contexts as well.


Social Mechanics: An Empirically Grounded Science of Social Media

What will social media sites of tomorrow look like? What behaviors will their interfaces enable? A major challenge for designing new sites that allow a broader range of user actions is the difficulty of extrapolating from experience with current sites without first distinguishing correlations from underlying causal mechanisms. The growing availability of data on user activities provides new opportunities to uncover correlations among user activity, contributed content and the structure of links among users. However, such correlations do not necessarily translate into predictive models. Instead, empirically grounded mechanistic models provide a stronger basis for establishing causal mechanisms and discovering the underlying statistical laws governing social behavior. We describe a statistical physics-based framework for modeling and analyzing social media and illustrate its application to the problems of prediction and inference. We hope these examples will inspire the research community to explore these methods to look for empirically valid causal mechanisms for the observed correlations.


Modeling Public Mood and Emotion: Twitter Sentiment and Socio-Economic Phenomena

We perform a sentiment analysis of all tweets published on the microblogging platform Twitter in the second half of 2008. We use a psychometric instrument to extract six mood states (tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, confusion) from the aggregated Twitter content and compute a six-dimensional mood vector for each day in the timeline. We compare our results to a record of popular events gathered from media and sources. We find that events in the social, political, cultural and economic sphere do have a significant, immediate and highly specific effect on the various dimensions of public mood. We speculate that large scale analyses of mood can provide a solid platform to model collective emotive trends in terms of their predictive value with regards to existing social as well as economic indicators.


A Bootstrapping Approach to Identifying Relevant Tweets for Social TV

Manufacturers of TV sets have recently started adding social media features to their products. Some of these products display microblogging messages relevant to the TV show which the user is currently watching. However, such systems suffer from low precision and recall when they use the title of the show to search for relevant messages. Titles of some popular shows such as Lost or Survivor are highly ambiguous, resulting in messages unrelated to the show. Thus, there is a need to develop filtering algorithms that can achieve both high precision and recall. Filtering microblogging messages for Social TV poses several challenges, including lack of training data, lack of proper grammar and capitalization, lack of context due to text sparsity, etc. We describe a bootstrapping algorithm which uses a small manually labeled dataset, a large dataset of unlabeled messages, and some domain knowledge to derive a high precision classifier that can successfully filter microblogging messages which discuss television shows. The classifier is designed to generalize to TV shows which were not part of the training set. The algorithm achieves high precision on our two test datasets and successfully generalizes to unseen television shows. Furthermore, it compares favorably to a text classifier specifically trained on the television shows used for testing.


Structuring E-Brainstorming to Better Support Innovation Processes

Innovation is a key instrument to start a transformational process based on collaboration. It is fundamental for organisations and institutions to have well defined strategies. In this context, brainstorming sessions - and e-brainstorming tools - are effective techniques to put together and associate draft ideas. Yet, in many cases, those ideas and associations do not leave enough digital footprints, are no further used or are lost. This paper introduces the use of Social and Semantic Web technologies to support e-brainstorming. In particular, we present a lightweight ontology to structure e-brainstorming sessions, and the enrichment of existing e-brainstorming tools to do so.


An Assessment of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation on Task Performance in Crowdsourcing Markets

Crowdsourced labor markets represent a powerful new paradigm for accomplishing work. Understanding the motivating factors that lead to high quality work could have significant benefits. However, researchers have so far found that motivating factors such as increased monetary reward generally increase workers’ willingness to accept a task or the speed at which a task is completed, but do not improve the quality of the work. We hypothesize that factors that increase the intrinsic motivation of a task – such as framing a task as helping others – may succeed in improving output quality where extrinsic motivators such as increased pay do not. In this paper we present an experiment testing this hypothesis along with a novel experimental design that enables controlled experimentation with intrinsic and extrinsic motivators in Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, a popular crowdsourcing task market. Results suggest that intrinsic motivation can indeed improve the quality of workers’ output, confirming our hypothesis. Furthermore, we find a synergistic interaction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that runs contrary to previous literature suggesting “crowding out” effects. Our results have significant practical and theoretical implications for crowd work.


Information Markets for Social Participation in Public Policy Design and Implementation

In this paper we propose a research agenda on the use of information markets as tools to collect, aggregate and analyze citizens’ opinions, expectations and preferences from social media in order to support public policy design and implementation. We argue that markets are institutional settings able to efficiently allocate scarce resources, aggregate and disseminate information into prices and accommodate hedging against various types of risks. We discuss various types of information markets, as well as address the participation of both human and computational agents in such markets.


The Party Is Over Here: Structure and Content in the 2010 Election

In this work, we study the use of Twitter by House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates during the midterm (2010) elections in the U.S. Our data includes almost 700 candidates and over 690k documents that they produced and cited in the 3.5 years leading to the elections. We utilize graph and text mining techniques to analyze differences between Democrats, Republicans and Tea Party candidates, and suggest a novel use of language modeling for estimating content cohesiveness. Our findings show significant differences in the usage patterns of social media, and suggest conservative candidates used this medium more effectively, conveying a coherent message and maintaining a dense graph of connections. Despite the lack of party leadership, we find Tea Party members display both structural and language-based cohesiveness. Finally, we investigate the relation between network structure, content and election results by creating a proof-of-concept model that predicts candidate victory with an accuracy of 88.0%.


Exploring Millions of Footprints in Location Sharing Services

Location sharing services (LSS) like Foursquare, Gowalla, and Facebook Places support hundreds of millions of user-driven footprints (i.e., "checkins"). Those global-scale footprints provide a unique opportunity to study the social and temporal characteristics of how people use these services and to model patterns of human mobility, which are significant factors for the design of future mobile+location-based services, traffic forecasting, urban planning, as well as epidemiological models of disease spread. In this paper, we investigate 22 million checkins across 220,000 users and report a quantitative assessment of human mobility patterns by analyzing the spatial, temporal, social, and textual aspects associated with these footprints. We find that: (i) LSS users follow the “Levy Flight” mobility pattern and adopt periodic behaviors; (ii) While geographic and economic constraints affect mobility patterns, so does individual social status; and (iii) Content and sentiment-based analysis of posts associated with checkins can provide a rich source of context for better understanding how users engage with these services.


An Empirical Study of Geographic User Activity Patterns in Foursquare

We present a large-scale study of user behavior in Foursquare, conducted on a dataset of about 700 thousand users that spans a period of more than 100 days. We analyze user checkin dynamics, demonstrating how it reveals meaningful spatio-temporal patterns and offers the opportunity to study both user mobility and urban spaces. Our aim is to inform on how scientific researchers could utilise data generated in Location-based Social Networks to attain a deeper understanding of human mobility and how developers may take advantage of such systems to enhance applications such as recommender systems.
