Ofcom to update codes of practice amid rise in'revenge porn' and AI-generated deepfakes targeting women and girls Social media, messaging platforms and online forums that publish intimate image abuse - often intended to humiliate women and girls - are being instructed to follow new guidelines to stop it spreading. Ofcom said it would change its codes of practice to force service providers to detect and quash intimate image abuse - sometimes called "revenge porn" - and crack down on AI-generated deepfakes. A wave of deepfakes emerged in January when Elon Musk's Grok AI was widely used to create sexualised videos of women in bikinis.
NextEra, Dominion to create huge power biz as AI drives US energy demand
NextEra Energy is seeking to acquire Dominion Energy in an all-stock deal valued at about $67bn, creating a massive power company as the energy needs of artificial intelligence (AI) drive demand higher in the United States. It is one of the biggest proposed mergers so far this year and would create the world's largest regulated electric utility business by market capitalisation, the companies said on Monday. The region has a fast-growing population and the world's biggest data centre hub, which is in Virginia. The deal will enable a swifter build-out of power infrastructure to deliver electricity to data centres proposing to connect to NextEra and Dominion, which total about 130 gigawatts of electricity demand, the companies' executives said. One gigawatt can power about 750,000 homes. The merger builds on NextEra's efforts to tap into surging demand for supplying electricity to data centres developed by Big Tech, largely for training and rolling out AI technologies.
Jury tosses Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and its boss Sam Altman
A California jury has tossed out Elon Musk's high-profile lawsuit against OpenAI and its boss Sam Altman. In a unanimous verdict, the case was thrown out because Musk had filed his lawsuit after a statute of limitations to bring such claims had expired. Musk had accused Altman of breaching a non-profit contract by shifting the ChatGPT-maker to a for-profit company after Musk donated $38m (ยฃ28.5m). Musk had argued Altman deceived him by accepting his money and then reneging on OpenAI's original non-profit mission to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology for the benefit of humanity. Jurors spent three weeks viewing internal correspondence and hearing testimony, and arrived at a verdict on Monday after deliberating for roughly two hours.
All of a Sudden, the Glories of Cannes Are Upon Us
In its first week, the seventy-ninth edition of the festival unveiled standout new works by James Gray, Paweล Pawlikowski, and Ryรปsuke Hamaguchi. Attend the Cannes Film Festival long enough, and you will grow wearily accustomed to the reality that some of the best films to premiรจre there are routinely overlooked for prizes. Lee Chang-dong magnificently unsettling psychological chiller, "Burning," failed to ignite the excitement of the 2018 jury. The tragicomic glories of Maren Ade's " Toni Erdmann," from 2016, were just as inexplicably unrewarded. Jurors shut out David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence," in 2005; Hou Hsiao-hsien's "Flowers of Shanghai," in 1998; Krzysztof Kieลlowski's "Three Colors: Red," in 1994; Martin Scorsese's "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," in 1975; and--the tradition goes way back--Vittorio De Sica's "Umberto D.," in 1952.
Elon Musk loses US lawsuit against OpenAI
A United States jury has ruled against Elon Musk in his lawsuit against OpenAI, finding the artificial intelligence (AI) company not liable to the world's richest person for having allegedly strayed from its original mission to benefit humanity. In a unanimous verdict on Monday, the jury in Oakland, California US federal court said Musk had brought his case too late. Following the verdict, Musk's lawyer said he reserved the right to appeal, but the judge suggested he may have an uphill battle because whether the statute of limitations ran out before Musk sued was a factual issue. "There's a substantial amount of evidence to support the jury's finding, which is why I was prepared to dismiss on the spot," US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said. Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI, the company that launched in 2015 and went on to create ChatGPT.

Elon Musk Loses Landmark Lawsuit Against OpenAI
The nine-member panel took only two hours to return a verdict in favor of OpenAI on Monday, which the judge quickly adopted as her own final decision. Elon Musk suffered the worst defeat possible in his legal battle against OpenAI as a federal jury and a judge ruled he waited too long to bring his claims against the AI startup and its top executives, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. The jury's decision was a nonbinding recommendation sent to US district judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, though she immediately accepted it on Monday as her own, making it final. The nine-member panel delivered the unanimous verdict in an Oakland, California courtroom after deliberating for under two hours. They found that statutes of limitations expired well before Musk filed his lawsuit in 2024.
Elon Musk reportedly owes quite a few of his employees 420
Elon Musk owes a bunch of xAI employees $420, according to a report by . The CEO reportedly promised employees earlier this year he would pony up that amount of money if they offered up their personal tax returns as training data for Grok. Surprisingly, payments have yet to materialize. This was an attempt to improve Grok's capabilities ahead of the April 15 US tax deadline. Many people use AI chatbots to help with tax returns, despite the risks, but most opt for Claude or ChatGPT over Grok.
