An artificial intelligence breakthrough from the universities of New York, Toronto and MIT is showcasing the impressive ability of artificial intelligence to learn visual concepts in a single shot and manipulate them in human-like ways. The advance could lead to smarter phones, much-improved speech recognition, and computers that better understand the world around them. Human beings show a remarkable ability to learn things on the fly: children, for example, need only be shown one example of a new object like a dog or schoolbus before they can identify other instances on their own. One of the reasons for our quickness, researchers believe, is that we often understand new concepts in terms of how their familiar parts work together as a whole. When we first saw a Segway, we quickly recognized wheels and a handle, concluding to a reasonable degree of certainty that it must be some form of personal transportation.

A robotic mule called AlphaDog never won't be part U.S. Marines. As it turns out, the robot is too loudy.U.S. Marine Corps has decided its Legged Squad Support System, or LS3, also known as the "robotic mule," is too loud to use on the battlefield. The Marines began testing the robotic mule in a series of training events in September, although officials at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency said the gas-powered quadruped would likely never see actual combat. The robot was used to carry equipment, lightening the load for troops on the field. Testing events included simulations in forests, open fields and urban environments, where the robot was able to carry over 400 pounds of equipment.


Citi: Robots could kill another 30% of bank jobs

A wave of innovation has made it possible for people to get their banking done without walking into a branch if they don't want to. People can now deposit checks using a smartphone or digitally fire off cash to friends using Venmo. The end result is a pretty sweet experience for consumers...but an imminent threat to people who work at bank branches. The downsizing of the bank workforce is about to accelerate as more technology takes over jobs humans used to do, according to a new Citigroup report. Another 30% of bank jobs could be lost between 2015 and 2025, mainly due to retail banking automation, Citi warned.

Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler is sending a convoy of three autonomous big rigs from its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, to Rotterdam, Holland, as part of the European Union-sponsored European Truck Platooning Challenge of 2016. Based on the series-produced Actros model, the three trucks are equipped with Mercedes' Highway Pilot Connect software, which relies on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology to let the rigs travel in what Daimler calls a platoon. Data about the road ahead gathered by the lead truck is constantly transferred to the two other trucks via a Wi-Fi connection, so each vehicle knows precisely when to accelerate, when to brake, and when to turn without requiring any human input. However, the driver must remain alert and focused on the road ahead. The trucks in the platoon follow each other in 50-foot intervals, which boosts gas mileage by up to ten percent by reducing drag.

Humanoid robots can sense the world around them, move their bodies, and interact with people in ways that are similar to the ways that real people interact. But a robot's "human-ness" is (at least for now) all just a simulation. It's a combination of clever software, and in some cases, hardware that's designed to make it easy for us to fool ourselves into thinking that some glorified box of circuits is even a little bit like a person. We're very, very good at fooling ourselves like this, to the point where it starts to get a little weird. Researchers from Stanford University will present a paper at the Annual Conference of the International Communication Association in Fukuoka, Japan, in June, with the title of "Touching a Mechanical Body: Tactile Contact With Intimate Parts of a Human-Shaped Robot is Physiologically Arousing."
