WASHINGTON – A Boeing company manager convicted of child pornography charges in December says he has a right to know what arguments the government used to obtain the warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Now, the Los Angeles case is testing a defendant's ability to access information about himself presented to the nation's secretive intelligence court, which issued the warrant that let agents scour his computers. At issue is how the government uses evidence derived through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and under what circumstances that information should be seen by defendants, particularly when it's repurposed for a routine criminal prosecution that has nothing to do with national security. Gartenlaub and his lawyers say they have a right to know the government's arguments that were used to obtain the warrant, and fight them. "You can't base a search on lies," the 47-year-old said in an interview with The Associated Press.
Servers with Nvidia's Tesla P100 GPU will ship next year
Nvidia's fastest GPU yet, the new Tesla P100, will be available in servers next year, the company said. Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Cray and IBM will start taking orders for servers with the Tesla P100 in the fourth quarter of this year, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said during a keynote at the GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, California. The servers will start shipping in the first quarter of next year, Huang said Tuesday. The GPU will also ship to companies designing hyperscale servers in-house and then to outsourced manufacturing shops. It will be available for in-house "cloud servers" by the end of the year, Huang said.

Saqib Shaikh is a London-based software developer who is working for Microsoft on the firm's Bing search engine, according to Forbes. He has been personally involved in the development of an application for cognitive computing, image recognition, and mobile headset technologies. The intelligence comes from "Seeing AI," a research project that helps people who are blind.

The company's most well-known AI project is Cortana, an integrated smartphone assistant that first appeared on Windows Mobile devices back in 2013. Unfortunately for Microsoft stock holders, at the time she was more of an effort to just keep up with Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Alphabet Inc (GOOGL, GOOG), with management hoping to retain at least some of its dying mobile device division.
Infy Arm Teams Up with IIIT-Delhi for Artificial Intelligence - The New Indian Express
BENGALURU: Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Infosys, on Monday announced that it will provide a corpus grant worth 24 crore over the next three years to the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi to establish the Infosys Centre for Artificial Intelligence on its Okhla campus. The centre will initially be headed by Srikanth Saripalli, an expert in robotics and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), currently spending his sabbatical at IIIT-Delhi. The centre will facilitate work on both fundamental and applied aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) and focus on areas such as robotics, machine learning, computer vision, AI for software systems, large-scale data analytics, among others. Several faculty members of IIIT-Delhi will be associated with the centre, and research will be conducted by PhD scholars, post-docs, students, and visiting researchers. The centre will start a specialised MTech course.

The first GTC took place in a set of hotel ballrooms a few blocks away. That's up from 4,000 last year, a growth rate that's tracked pretty steady since the start of the show. The stage is about five feet off the ground. And on the vast screen is an NVIDIA-green moving image that, as it scans looks like a multi-level rendering of the brain's neural network. With some electronics thrown in between. A great many of those here, though, are scientists and analysts of the computational sort -- those who rely on NVIDIA GPUs to help them crunch the rising sea of data that's engulfing us. A lot are associated with universities, close to 200 of them. Virtually every one of the top 100 university comp sci departments are here. There are also hundreds of companies represented--certainly the dozens of major web-services companies that use artificial intelligence. But also industrials, oil and gas, retail. Err, less so this time. But folks don't seem to mind.

A breakthrough year for artificial intelligence (AI) research has suddenly turned into a breakdown, as a new automated banking system that runs on AI has been caught embezzling money from customers. The surprising turn of events may set back by years efforts to incorporate AI into everyday technology. "This is the nightmare scenario," says Len Meha-Döhler, a computer scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge who was not involved in the work. However, Rob Ott, a computer scientist at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, who did work on the system--Deep Learning Interface for Accounting (DELIA)--notes that it simply held all of the missing money, some 40,120.16, in a "rainy day" account. "I don't think you can attribute malice," he says.

Amazon Acquires Image Analysis Startup Orbeus
Amazon.com Inc. acquired artificial-intelligence startup Orbeus Inc., according to a person familiar with the matter, part of a broader push by the world's largest Internet retailer into smart software for its cloud-computing and connected-device businesses. The acquisition took place in the fall of 2015, said the person who asked not to be identified because Amazon hasn't announced the deal. An Amazon spokeswoman and representatives at Sunnyvale, California-based Orbeus, including Chief Executive Officer Yi Li, did not respond to requests for comment. An online search shows that the startup's domain name, Orbe.us, is owned by registrant Amazon Hostmaster, part of an Amazon subsidiary called Amazon Technologies Inc. Orbeus developed photo-recognition technology based on a powerful type of AI called neural networks and made this available as a consumer application, as well as a service for other companies and developers called ReKognition. It automatically categorized and identified the contents of photos. Orbeus's app, PhotoTime, came out before Google launched its successful AI-based Photos app.
