IBM Wants to Implant Fake Brains in Real Brains to Prevent Seizures
In Melbourne, Australia, Stefan Harrer is running an artificial software brain atop an artificial hardware brain in an effort to analyze a brain that isn't artificial at all. Ultimately, he and his colleagues envision merging these three brains together so that the artificial can augment the real. Harrer is an IBM researcher stationed at the company's Australian research lab. Together with neurologists at the University of Melbourne, he's developing a computing system that can analyze your brain waves in an effort to predict epileptic seizures. 'Our aim is to replace broken neural systems with machines.'

They're even better than the actual expendable sonar systems, because they're not constrained by battery life: the drone's rotors are covered in solar cells and can generate power after a little time under the sun. In addition, it can hunt for subs in flocks in case the Navy wants to scour a big area more quickly. Jones told the publication that as a sonobuoy replacement, the drone "[will] be on the water 23 hours a day, and flying maybe one hour a day." It was designed as a "launch and forget" system with a water-tight enclosure, though, so we're guessing it's tough enough to endure the ocean's harsh conditions. Speaking of drones that can take off from water, researchers from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory created a similar machine called CRACUNS.
Facebook Automated Captions Improve Accessibility, Provide Additional Insights
Yesterday, Facebook announced the release of automatic alternative text - or automatic alt text - for images posted to Facebook. Automatic alt text uses object recognition technology to generate a description of a photo, processing each through Facebook's artificial intelligence engine to establish image content. It's the latest advancement in Facebook's image recognition technology, a system they've been working on for the last few years, with artificial intelligence guru and New York University professor Yann LeCun at the helm. Last November, Facebook showcased the progress they'd made with their image recognition AI, with their system able to distinguish between objects in a photo 30% faster, and using 10x less training data, than previous industry benchmarks. The live launch of automated captions show just how far their system has advanced, and while it's still not able to provide full, detailed descriptions of everything in each image, the fact that it can be reliably used at all in a live environment is relatively impressive.
Computer paints a new Rembrandt after analyzing artist's works
Artificial intelligence and machine learning have been getting a lot of media attention lately, from Google's AlphaGo to Microsoft and Facebook's photo recognition for the blind. But being able to analyze and learn from cold hard facts is one thing. Being able to derive something creative out of it is a whole different ballpark. But that's exactly what Microsoft and some partners accomplished when they let a computer "paint" an entirely new original piece of art just after analyzing Rembrandt's existing corpus. The two-year project, which was aptly called "New Rembrandt", involved Microsoft, financial firm ING, Delft University of Technology, and the Mauritshuis and Rembrandthuis Dutch art museums.

Volvo Announces Plans To Launch Driverless Car Experiment In China
Volvo Group announced Thursday it plans to launch an experiment involving a fleet of 100 self-driving cars in China, as part of its commitment to make its cars "death proof" by 2020. The experiment will see local customers test the cars on public roads in everyday conditions. The Swedish carmaker, wholly owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., said in a statement it would start the project in the coming months based on talks with various Chinese cities to gauge interest and to "see which is able to provide the necessary permissions, regulations and infrastructure to allow the experiment to go ahead." Volvo called the project "China's most advanced autonomous driving experiment." The experiment will be conducted in a fashion similar to its testing program in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, scheduled to start in 2017.
Machine learning goes for baroque and paints 'brand new' Rembrandt
The all-new Rembrandt painting is entirely digitally generated. How badly would you like to see a new work by them? Technology may be the key, if a newly completed project is any indication. A team of Microsoft data technicians and art historians have used digital analysis, facial recognition and 3D printing to create an entirely new painting in the style of Dutch Baroque painter Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). The project, called Next Rembrandt, took 18 months to complete. It was a collaboration between ING, Microsoft, Delft University of Technology, The Mauritshuis and Museum Het Rembrandthuis.
