Facebook F8: Messenger to get new robot powers and virtual reality to roll out at company's developer conference

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Tech Five: Facebook kicks off f8 conference

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

China to lead the world in artificial intelligence, says top Microsoft executive

#artificialintelligence

China will "lead the world" in producing artificially intelligent hardware as the tech industry continues to find breakthroughs in this field, according to a Microsoft executive. Citing examples like Baidu, Harry Shum, executive vice-president of technology and research in Microsoft, said Chinese internet companies are playing an important role in advancing artificial intelligence. "Baidu is building autonomous driving vehicles, and many other Chinese companies are ... doing serious technology development in the artificial intelligence area," said Shum. "If we have the opportunity to democratise artificial intelligence technology through the cloud, we just need a few [Chinese companies] with good ideas and we can [advance] very quickly." He added that he is "bullish" about the artificially intelligent hardware industry in China because cities like Shenzhen are building an ecosystem that supports the technology. "In southern China, you can see these different layers, from manufacturing capabilities, sensors, circuit design, all of that," said Shum. "They used to make low-end phones, but now [can you imagine] what they could do next?"

Hello, I am BBCTechbot. How can I help? - BBC News

Chatbots are on the rise, but what are they and why is everyone talking about (and to) them? Facebook is widely expected to launch an app store for chatbots at its developer conference this week. Meanwhile, Microsoft has described chatbots as the "new apps" with chief executive Satya Nadella saying that they "unlock conversation as a platform". The BBC "created" its own one-off chatbot to answer some of the burning questions you may have about this latest technology. What can I help you with Jane?

NVIDIA Launches World's First Deep Learning Supercomputer

@machinelearnbot

NVIDIA today unveiled the NVIDIA DGX-1, the world's first deep learning supercomputer to meet the unlimited computing demands of artificial intelligence. The NVIDIA DGX-1 is the first system designed specifically for deep learning -- it comes fully integrated with hardware, deep learning software and development tools for quick, easy deployment. It is a turnkey system that contains a new generation of GPU accelerators, delivering the equivalent throughput of 250 x86 servers.1 The DGX-1 deep learning system enables researchers and data scientists to easily harness the power of GPU-accelerated computing to create a new class of intelligent machines that learn, see and perceive the world as humans do. It delivers unprecedented levels of computing power to drive next-generation AI applications, allowing researchers to dramatically reduce the time to train larger, more sophisticated deep neural networks. NVIDIA designed the DGX-1 for a new computing model to power the AI revolution that is sweeping across science, enterprises and increasingly all aspects of daily life.

Exclusive: See How Cuphead's Incredible Cartoon Graphics Are Made

TIME - Tech

Cuphead, due later this year for Xbox One and PC, looks like Betty Boop meets a shoot'em up meets a miracle. Studio MDHR's game a 2D side-scroller where you do battle with giant paranormal carrots, boxing frogs, angry birds, queen bees, gambling contraptions and not-so-little mermaids. And all of that's hand-sketched, inked and painted to resemble a 1930s Max Fleischer cartoon--an interactive mashup no one's ever attempted before. Cuphead lead artist Chad Moldenhauer gave TIME an exclusive look behind the scenes of how the studio animates the game. TIME: I think it's accurate to say that Cuphead looks like nothing we've seen in video games before. Moldenhauer: We were worried when we first set out with this style that there wouldn't be a huge fan base, just that this had never been tried in games in the past. And there was no real love for cartoons, at least that you could see around people's blogs, or around the Internet, or just talking to our friends.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket arrives at Port Canaveral

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The first stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched Friday has returned to the Space Coast. SpaceX confirmed the booster's early morning Tuesday arrival at Port Canaveral on its official Twitter and Instagram accounts around 2:30 a.m. In a photo, the charred first stage of the rocket stands tall on the "Of Course I Still Love You" autonomous ship near the port's 273-foot-tall cranes. A crane will lift the 14-story rocket stage off the boat onto a stand, before it is transported to a hangar at Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The operation's exact timeframe is unclear, but the stage probably will be at the port for at least Tuesday before it is moved. If the rocket stage is deemed in good enough condition after inspections and multiple test firings of its nine Merlin 1D engines, CEO Elon Musk said SpaceX could try to launch it again as soon as June.

Atos aims to deliver an exaflop supercomputer to French government by 2020

PCWorld

Computer manufacturer Atos has named its first customer for Bull sequana, a supercomputer design it hopes will reach exaflop levels of performance by 2020. Atos is building the computer for the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), it said Tuesday. By targeting 2020 for delivery of an exaflop supercomputer, Atos is entering a race in which China and Japan may already have a head-start. An exaflop is a billion billion floating-point operations per second (flops). That's way more than today's fastest machine can manage: China's Tianhe-2 has a maximum performance of 33.9 petaflops (millions of billions of flops), according to the November 2015 edition of the Top500 supercomputer rankings.

Tough days ahead for HK finance industry

Hong Kong's economy is likely to encounter quite serious challenges in the coming two or three years. A study released by the University of Hong Kong predicts the city's economy will grow 1.5 percent this year. I think the real GDP growth rate may be close to zero, or even fall below zero. The situation in the second half may even be worse. Currently, Hong Kong's economy has four pillars: trade and logistics, tourism, finance and professional services.
