Robot Scientist could make Drug Development Faster and much Cheaper

Automation is a growing phenomenon within many areas of scientific development especially within the area of research and development of new medicines. The pharmaceutical industry is constantly striving to create new drugs to combat and treat these diseases because of the research timescales and costs involved it's an increasingly difficult challenge and therefore improving the speed of the drug recovery process is of paramount importance. At The University of Manchester, a team of scientists has developed EVE, a scientist robot. EVE uses Artificial Intelligence to identify, sort and separate the compounds which can then help researchers narrow down new drug candidates faster. Artificial intelligence that robots like EVE possess ensures that the speed at which they can process formulae and combinations is much faster than the speed at which a human brain can function.

Actor and writer Wil Wheaton wants to "add an A to the STEM acronym and make it STEAM." He'll be speaking at the USA Science and Engineering Festival April 16-17 in Washington about why he thinks the arts should be represented in the acronym commonly used when referring to the science, technology, engineering and math fields. Wheaton, 43, best known for his role as Wesley Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the 1980s and '90s and more recently as a fictionalized version of himself on "The Big Bang Theory," says that he has always been fascinated by science and technology, and has made it a goal of his to ensure that kids get the encouragement they need to pursue those fields. Wheaton spoke with U.S. News by phone about why he got involved in the festival, how science fiction and fact have shaped his life and career and why he thinks it should be "science, technology, engineering, arts and math." Feeling like you've lost control while driving a car can be quite a frightening experience. And a new video shows this can be the case even when the car is equipped with the latest technology that means it is more than capable of driving itself. An elderly woman in the US has had a hilarious reaction to using the autopilot function in a Tesla Model S for the first time. The autopilot function lets the car use a range of sensors both inside and outside the vehicle to maintain its speed, keep a safe distance from the car in front and change lanes automatically. Tesla requires drivers to remain engaged and aware when Autosteer is enabled and drivers must keep their hands on the steering wheel, the company said.

Old aircraft re-purposed as AI drones for US fighter jets

Armed drones could take to the air for testing alongside US fighter pilots as early as 2018. The Air Force's'Loyal Wingman' program aims to pair fifth generation fighter jets with unmanned older craft, using computer algorithms to give pilots control of the drones. The initiative would allow a drone to take the lead in navigating dangerous environments, pinpointing targets without putting a human pilot at risk. As Dr. Darren S. McKnight of Integrity Applications explained during a recent presentation at the 32nd Space Symposium held in Colorado Springs, Colo., this week, every satellite collision could potentially produce hundreds to thousands of debris fragments. And each of those fragments in turn becomes a potential satellite-killing missile. Even tiny bits of debris just a centimeter in diameter, known as the lethal non-trackable (LNT) population, can blast holes clean through satellite components, rendering the spacecraft non-operational. In fact, these LNT debris are in many ways more dangerous than larger pieces, due to the sheer number of them. McKnight calculates that there are anywhere from 15 to 30 times as many LNT debris currently in orbit than the entire cataloged population of pieces bigger than 10cm.
