John Searle: "Consciousness in Artificial Intelligence" Talks at Google
John Searle is the Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. His Talk at Google is focused on the philosophy of mind and the potential for consciousness in artificial intelligence. This Talk was hosted for Google's Singularity Network. John is widely noted for his contributions to the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and social philosophy. Searle has received the Jean Nicod Prize, the National Humanities Medal, and the Mind & Brain Prize for his work.
British Airways Airbus believed struck drone on final into Heathrow
LONDON – A British Airways plane struck an object believed to be a drone on Sunday as it was coming in for landing at Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, police said. An investigation had been launched into the incident, which follows a string of near misses involving drones. The plane, an Airbus A320 with 132 passengers and five crew members on board, was on its final descent into Heathrow's Terminal Five when it was struck. "A pilot on an inbound flight into Heathrow Airport from Geneva reported to police that he believed a drone had struck the aircraft," a spokeswoman for London's Metropolitan Police said. "The flight landed at Heathrow Terminal Five safely. It transpired that an object, believed to be a drone, had struck the front of the aircraft".
Drone over Heathrow was 'wingspan away' from collision with jet
Two more near-misses between drones and passenger planes at UK airports have been reported by aviation authorities, including one a "wingspan away" from a jet landing at Heathrow. Pilots have called for a clampdown on drone use after a spate of incidents. Among the latest six to be investigated and verified by the UK Airprox Board, which monitors the threat of midair collisions, three were in the most serious bracket of risk, one involving a small light aircraft and two involving larger passenger planes. The closest calls came in late September as an Airbus A319, which typically carry up to 180 passengers, landed at Heathrow, and two days later as a turboprop commuter plane, believed to be a LoganAir flight to Scotland, left Manchester airport. The pilot at Heathrow reported a drone helicopter hovering close to his flight path, and was unable to take evasive action as the drone passed less than 30 metres away from his A319.

The Rise of the Machines
Artificial intelligence will identify, assess and underwrite emerging risks and identify new revenue sources. The first machine age, the Industrial Revolution, saw the automation of physical work. We live in the second machine age, where there is increasing augmentation and automation of manual and cognitive work. This second machine age has seen the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), or "intelligence" that is not the result of human cogitation. It is now ubiquitous in many commercial products, from search engines to virtual assistants.
Google's Alphabet has a new Japanese robot
Google's Alphabet has a new walking robot that wouldn't look out of place in Interstellar or science-fiction homes of the future. The reportedly as-yet-unnamed robot was shown off at the New Economic Summit in Tokyo by Alphabet-owned Japanese robotics company Schaft. It has a very different design to Alphabet's other robots made by Boston Dynamics, with a compact two-leg design and central body that can be moved up or down to cope with different tasks. Unlike Alphabet's larger bipedal robots designed either to interact in a human-like fashion with the world - the humanoid Atlas - or to be a robotic packhorse for the US military or dog's plaything, the Schaft robot is designed to be lower cost, lower power and be used by civilians, carrying up to 60kg over uneven terrain and stairs. The robot was demonstrated dealing with unsure footing, compensating for standing on a moving pipe in one instance and walking on shingle in another.
The Current State of Artificial Intelligence
The basic premise of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) was originally that human intelligence is predictable enough that it can be simulated with computers. As such, A.I. is a broad field involving many areas of research. This includes computer vision, language recognition, decision-making. In more recent years, A.I. has also acquired other challenges including machine learning/ deep learning, as well as robotics as a whole. In fact, if you were to ask the average person what they thought of when someone mentions "artificial intelligence," it's likely they would say "robots" -- thanks to pop culture: TV shows, movies, comics, books and toys.
