Consider the plight of your average camera-equipped computer, like your laptop, phone, or security camera. It might want to be smart, but for its lenses to really learn, it has to have access to a learning system-- a neural network or artificial intelligence. Many of these systems are shared in the cloud. Now, thanks to a new product released this week by Movidius, camera-enabled computers can be locally empowered with intelligent visual processing. It doesn't need to be cooled, barely uses energy, and learns locally. Says CEO Remi El-Ouazzane, "The reason we have introduced the Fathom Neural Compute Stick is that it allows a much wider segment of companies, researchers and hardware hackers to be able to implement machine learning without needing to be a multibillion-dollar OEM device manufacturer."
Alberta flies drones to find cause of epic Canadian wildfire
LAC, LA BICHE ALBERTA – Fire-ravaged Alberta will use drones to investigate the cause of a huge blaze that has scorched the Canadian province and displaced some 88,000 people. Elevated Robotic Services, which has also deployed drones for mining and construction companies, has contracts with the Alberta government and insurance broker Hub International Ltd., said Mat Matthews, the Edmonton company's operations and safety manager. The drones use cameras outfitted with infrared, ultraviolet and traditional optical cameras to pinpoint the hottest part of the fire and trace it to its source based on time, wind and other factors. The cameras will shoot about 800 images, which are then stitched together in a process called fire-mapping. "It's like Google Maps but 100 times better," Matthews said at a police roadblock south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, as smoke from the 156,000-hectare (385,000-acre) fire blackened the sky.

Up to 1.6 million patients have had their private medical files passed on to Google without their permission, it was revealed today The internet giant was given the data by one of the largest NHS trusts to develop an app to monitor possible kidney failure. The encrypted information includes the names and medical histories of every patient who had stayed in hospital overnight or attended A&E in the past five years. None of the patients was told beforehand and the revelation has exposed the ease with which private companies can obtain highly sensitive medical information without consent. Privacy campaigners told MailOnline that the revelations exposed the public's lack of power and control over their own personal details. Experts say the deal between Google and the Royal Free NHS Trust could set a precedent for patient data to be routinely passed on to private firms.

Nvidia GPU-powered autonomous car teaches itself to see and steer
During the past nine months, an Nvidia engineering team built a self-driving car with one camera, one Drive-PX embedded computer and only 72 hours of training data. Nvidia published an academic preprint of the results of the DAVE2 project entitled End to End Learning for Self-Driving Cars on arXiv.org The Nvidia project called DAVE2 is named after a 10-year-old Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) project known as DARPA Autonomous Vehicle (DAVE). Although neural networks and autonomous vehicles seem like a just-invented-now technology, researchers such as Google's Geoffrey Hinton, Facebook's Yann Lecune and the University of Montreal's Yoshua Bengio have collaboratively researched this branch of artificial intelligence for more than two decades. And the DARPA DAVE project application of neural network-based autonomous vehicles was preceded by the ALVINN project developed at Carnegie Mellon in 1989.

Co-founder MQ Wang, a Stanford PhD alum focused on machine learning and natural language processing, was inspired to create the autonomous Hover Camera after watching a documentary about a man who walked 1600 miles solo across Australia. Using a machine learning model trained on an NVIDIA Tesla K40 GPU, the camera automatically tracks your face to take photos and capture videos wherever you go. "We wanted the user experience to be very natural -- easy to use," MQ told Mashable. "We wanted to make sure the learning curve for users is minimum. So there is no remote control or anything.
IBM Inches Ahead of Google in Race for Quantum Computing Power
All kinds of things are hooked up to the Internet these days, but Jerry Chow's computer stands out. Chilled by liquid helium, his superconducting processor uses quantum physics to circumvent rules of everyday reality that limit the power of conventional computers. Chow manages IBM's quantum computing group at the company's Thomas J. Watson research center in Yorktown Heights, New York. The team launched a website today with an interface that lets outside programmers and researchers test algorithms on the new chip. Chow says he wants to get them ready for the undetermined point in the future when this exotic kind of cloud computer is ready for practical use.
