Futurist, inventor and Google Inc. director of engineering Ray Kurzweil has some high praise -- and a friendly dig -- for the Waterloo region. Kurzweil said he visits many communities and gives many speeches like the one he delivered Thursday at the Tech Leadership Conference, hosted by the innovation hub Communitech. Wherever he goes, people tell him he's visiting the region's equivalent of Silicon Valley: "Our community is the Silicon Valley of the Left Bank of Paris, our community is the Silicon Valley of Tel Aviv." "Kitchener-Waterloo and the Toronto area really are a Silicon Valley, second only maybe to the actual Silicon Valley. A place that celebrates the idea that failure is something to be, if not encouraged, at least accepted," he said. "We have a word for failure. The only way to make these innovations in the world is to accept these frustrations and setbacks."

Researchers have developed a computer system that can train dogs without the help of a human. The team from North Carolina State University developed a harness which contains an array of sensors to monitor posture and body language. Using a small built-in computer to transmit data, the system can give out rewards for correct behaviour by releasing a treat from a nearby dispenser. MIT's tiny robot operates on your stomach from the inside
This new design is a follow up to an older origami robot also developed by a team headed by MIT CSAIL director Daniela Rus. It has a completely different design and propels itself by using its corners that can stick to the stomach's surface. The team decided to focus on battery retrieval, because people swallow 3,500 button batteries in the US alone. While they can be digested normally, they sometimes burn people's stomach and esophagus linings. This robot can easily fish them out of one's organs before that happens. Besides origami surgeons, Rus-led teams created a plethora of other cool stuff in the past, including robots that can assemble themselves in the oven.

Brian Lesko and Dan Sherman hate the idea of driverless cars, but for very different reasons. Lesko, 46, a business-development executive in Atlanta, doesn't trust a robot to keep him out of harm's way. "It scares the bejeebers out of me," he says. Sherman, 21, a mechanical-engineering student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, trusts the technology and sees these vehicles eventually taking over the road. But he dreads the change because his passion is working on cars to make them faster.

My aim is to point out common mistakes in thinking about those things, and how to do better. I enjoy thinking about thinking. That's one reason I spent a dozen years in artificial intelligence research. To make a computer think, you'd need to understand how you think. So AI research is a way of thinking about thinking that forces you to be specific. It calls your bluff if you think you understand thinking, but don't. Contextual deep learning allows artificial intelligence machines to react in a more natural and intelligent way to the real-world auditory, visual or other type of data. According to Tech Spot, the concept of having a machine capable of reacting in an intelligent way has been until very recently a matter of science fiction. However, this concept is certainly very compelling and scientists were working on transform this into reality. We are now on the verge of creating this new reality. Meet Viv, the Artificial Intelligence That Will Change the Way You Live
The winds of change are blowing through Silicon Valley--not terribly unusual, granted, considering that something new seems to come out of that part of the world several times a year. But this time, we seem to be witnessing the opening of what promises to be a sea of change in computing: The joining of all our devices--including computers, smartphones, smart homes, and even smart cars--with the virtual synapses of a serviceable artificial intelligence, complete with realistic conversational abilities. We've already seen some earlier attempts at realizing this dream. But, some sassy dialogue notwithstanding, these machine "intelligences" have notorious limitations, something the designers of the newest entrant on the scene, Viv, hope to do away with once and for all. Viv's creators, Dag Kittlaus and Adam Cheyer--who also created Siri, before selling it to Apple--hope that their newest creation will become the portal through which users interface with the internet.
