Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

In this talk we'll describe some of the data characteristics which make anomaly detection for real world problems challenging and describe some of the techniques we use at Prelert for anomaly detection. As the complexity of IT systems and the quantity of data people gather increases, proactively managing the health and security of these systems requires increasingly sophisticated monitoring tools. Rule based approaches are either becoming unmanageable or in need of augmentation, and the complexity and scale of the data pose significant challenges.


The Future of the Turing Test? College Admissions

Back in 1950, computer scientist, codebreaker, and war hero Alan Turing introduced the world to a very simple premise: If a robot can engage in a text-based conversation with a person and fool that person into believing it is human at least 30 percent of the time, surely we could agree that the robot is a "thinking" machine. Turing's goal was to force people to think more creatively about computer interaction, but he inadvertently ended up creating the test that robot intelligence developers and commentators have relied on for years. They're focused on more substantive metrics. Fundamentally, the problem with the Turing Test is that it's poorly defined therefore facilitates hype (i.e. that fake teaching assistant in Georgia) rather than offering easily duplicated results. Beyond that, one can argue that it measures human weakness, not artificial strength.

Dartmouth contest shows computers aren't such good poets

Computers are pretty good at stocking shelves and operating cars, but are not so good at writing poetry. Scientists in a Dartmouth College competition reached that conclusion after designing artificial intelligence algorithms that could produce sonnets. Judges compared the results with poems written by humans to see if they could tell the difference. In every instance, the judges were able to find the sonnet produced by a computer program. The competition was a variation of the "Turing Test," named for British computer scientist Alan Turing, who in 1950 proposed an experiment to determine if a computer could have humanlike intelligence.

That's the belief motivating the founders of Vicarious, an enigmatic AI company backed by some of the most famous and successful names in Silicon Valley. Vicarious is developing a new way of processing data, inspired by the way information seems to flow through the brain. The company's leaders say this gives computers something akin to imagination, which they hope will help make the machines a lot smarter.


How to Create a Malevolent Artificial Intelligence

The possibility that a malevolent artificial intelligence might pose a serious threat to humankind has become a hotly debated issue. Various high profile individuals from the physicist Stephen Hawking to the tech entrepreneur Elon Musk have warned of the danger. Which is why the field of artificial intelligence safety is emerging as an important discipline. Computer scientists have begun to analyze the unintended consequences of poorly designed AI systems, of AI systems created with faulty ethical frameworks or ones that do not share human values. But there's an important omission in this field, say independent researchers Federico Pistono and Roman Yampolskiy from the University of Louisville in Kentucky. "Nothing, to our knowledge, has been published on how to design a malevolent machine," they say.


GloVe: Global Vectors for Word Representation

GloVe is essentially a log-bilinear model with a weighted least-squares objective. The main intuition underlying the model is the simple observation that ratios of word-word co-occurrence probabilities have the potential for encoding some form of meaning. For example, consider the co-occurrence probabilities for target words ice and steam with various probe words from the vocabulary. As one might expect, ice co-occurs more frequently with solid than it does with gas, whereas steam co-occurs more frequently with gas than it does with solid. Both words co-occur with their shared property water frequently, and both co-occur with the unrelated word fashion infrequently.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - The Google I/O conference brings developers--the folks who make apps for phones, computers, TVs and the like--together for a status update on all that Google is up to. The hope is that they'll start creating apps for new technologies being touted. So we spent time at the I/O conference talking to developers about what excites them about Google's future. Google demonstrated a new way of mapping, using a tablet to monitor the insides of buildings, at its Sandbox area of I/O, devoted to the newest technologies being introduced, and the exhibit easily drew the longest lines and biggest crowds.


Uber begins testing self-driving cars in Pittsburgh

Uber's new self-driving car has begun testing on the streets of Pittsburgh. SAN FRANCISCO - The first Uber car that doesn't need a driver has hit the streets. The ride-hailing behemoth announced in a blog post Thursday that it has begun testing a self-driving car in Pittsburgh, home of the company's nascent Advanced Technologies Center. The car, a Ford Fusion Hybrid with a roof-full of radar, lasers and cameras, will be collecting road-mapping data as well as testing its real-world traffic reactions. Uber's interest in autonomous car technology dates to a year ago, when the 60 billion startup began hiring Carnegie Mellon University robotics experts to staff its new center not far from the Pittsburgh-based school.
