Could we soon be getting it on in the front seats of our cars? With the rise of self-driving vehicles, all of the time that was once spent navigating the road could soon be spent having sex. At least that's what Barrie Kirk of the Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence recently told The Toronto Sun. "I am predicting that, once computers are doing the driving, there will be a lot more sex in cars," Kirk said, adding that could mean big trouble because it will be "one of several things people will do which will inhibit their ability to respond quickly when the computer says to the human, 'Take over.'" Flapping two tiny wings, the small, thin robot wobbles its way towards the underside of a leaf, bumps into the surface and latches on, perching motionless above the ground. Moments later, its wings begin to flap once more and it jiggles off on its way. The little flying machine, dubbed a "RoboBee", has been designed to perch on a host of different surfaces, opening up new possibilities for the use of drones in providing a bird's-eye view of the world, scientists say. Know as micro aerial vehicles, such robots could be invaluable in reconnaissance of disaster zones or to form impromptu communication networks. But there is a hitch: flying takes energy, so the time these robots can spend in the air is limited by the size of the battery pack they can carry.

There's lots of talk about the effect that FinTech (or, at least the artificial intelligence (AI) and smart machines it's producing) will have on jobs in the financial services industry. Here are a couple of examples. In a recent CFA Institute survey, respondents indicated that automated financial advice tools will have the largest impact on the asset management sector, followed by banking, securities, and insurance. At the recent Milken Institute Global Conference, Daniel Nadler, the chief executive of finance at the analytics firm Kensho, said traditional financial services firms, like J.P. Morgan, will still be here in the long run -- "they'll just be more efficient." He goes on to say "Analysts, young associates, vice presidents -- anyone whose job is moving a column of data from one spreadsheet to another is going to get automated."

Is Google's new chip a game changer for AI?
In the arms race between Silicon Valley giants to develop faster and more complex artificial intelligence capabilities, Google has a secret weapon: It's developing its own chips. At a conference for developers on Wednesday, chief executive Sundar Pichai said the tech giant had designed the chip, which the company says it's been using for over a year, specifically to improve its deep neural network. These networks are the brains that "learn" over time to to power features such as Gmail's "Smart Reply," and the ability to tag people in photos and search by voice. The chips were also in place when Google's AlphaGo computer program beat Go champion Lee Sedol in March, although the company didn't announce it at the time. As companies have increasingly focused on building tools that use machine learning as a backbone, they've also branched out into creating their own chips instead of purchasing them from major vendors, such as Nvidia.

The sea wasp, a kind of jellyfish, can kill people in as little as three minutes by wrapping them in ten-foot-long tentacles and inflicting stings all over the body, injecting them with a potent and extremely painful venom. Saab has developed technology named after this terrifying creature-- in the form of a robot that will be able to discover and tackle bombs hidden underwater off U.S. shores and near American vessels. To test its Sea Wasp technology, Saab has partnered with the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office. The U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Divers Group 2, the FBI Counter-IED Section, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's Counter-Terrorist Operations Maritime Response Unit will all be testing the Sea Wasp over the next 10 to 12 months. The threat of improvised explosive devices underwater continues to grow.

Dartmouth contest shows computers aren't such good poets
Computers are pretty good at stocking shelves and operating cars, but are not so good at writing poetry. Scientists in a Dartmouth College competition reached that conclusion after designing artificial intelligence algorithms that could produce sonnets. Judges compared the results with poems written by humans to see if they could tell the difference. In every instance, the judges were able to find the sonnet produced by a computer program. The competition was a variation of the "Turing Test," named for British computer scientist Alan Turing, who in 1950 proposed an experiment to determine if a computer could have humanlike intelligence.
