Just how worried should we be about killer robots? To go by the opinions of a highly regarded group of scholars, including Stephen Hawking, Max Tegmark, Franz Wilczek and Stuart Russell, we should be wary of the prospect of artificial intelligence rebelling against its makers. "One can imagine (AI) outsmarting financial markets, outinventing human researchers, outmanipulating human leaders, and developing weapons we cannot even understand," Hawking wrote in a 2014 article for The Independent. "Whereas the short-term impact of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all." The fear that our irresponsible creations might bring about the end of humanity is a common one.

AI startup taps human 'swarm' intelligence to predict winners
Who says artificial intelligence doesn't involve humans? Try telling that to Silicon Valley startup Unanimous AI. After recently achieving the rare "superfecta" -- picking the top four finishers in the Kentucky Derby -- using UNU, a new form of human-based AI using algorithms, the company is ready to share its formula with the public. After more than a year of testing, the online platform is now available in open beta. UNU relies on an artificial "swarm" of human group intelligence that come together in real time to make predictions, said Louis Rosenberg, its creator.

Putting it all together, the following example shows the equity curve representing cumulative returns of the model strategy, with all values expressed in dollars. To increase the precision of forecasted values, instead of a standard probability of 0.5 (50 percent) we choose a higher threshold value, to be more confident that the model predicts an Up day. As we can see by the chart above, the equity curve is much better than before (Sharpe is 6.5 instead of 3.5), even with fewer round turns. From this point on, we will consider all next models with a threshold higher than a standard value. We can apply our research, as we did previously with the decision tree, into a Logistic Classifier model.
ARM's Bifrost steps up graphics, bridges to machine learning
The architecture includes maths capabilities that could be used by other software as part of a heterogeneous system architecture. That could include neural network software but ARM executives stressed that Bifrost is first and foremost an architecture for raster, tile-based graphics processing units (GPUs). The previous architecture – Midgard – is the one that underlies ARM's T-series Mali GPUs and has up to 16 unified shader cores and SIMD [single-instruction multiple data] instruction set architecture. Bifrost supports up to 32 unified shader cores with a scalar ISA, full hardware cache coherency and something called clause execution. The primary goal, according to Sean Ellis, GPU architect with ARM, was to achieve more performance per square millimeter of silicon and per line of "real-world" shader code.
How Apple's advanced self-learning technologies could make Siri a lot smarter
The assistant wars are in full swing, with Google Assistant and Viv entering the fray and existing players such as Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, Hound and Google's Now all stepping up fight for consumers' hearts and minds. Apple's rumored Amazon Echo competitor, which VentureBeat believes is a next-gen Apple TV, could blow all the assistants out of the water when it comes to deciphering complex natural language queries. And powering it--VocalIQ, a sophisticate technology Apple acquired back in October 2015. Tech Insider provided an in-depth overview of how VocalIQ could make Siri a lot smarter than it is today. Tech Insider's piece, titled "Apple is working on an AI system that wipes the floor with Google and everyone else," notes that Apple had been testing VocalIQ technology against Siri, Google Now and Cortana. "Users asked each AI questions using normal language, not the robotic commands you're used to using with digital assistants," reads the article.
