Meet Zenbo, the Asus robot that costs no more than a smartphone
The Taiwanese electronics manufacture Asus has unveiled a home robot called Zenbo that can talk, control your home and provide assistance when needed โ all for the cost of a top-end smartphone. It is capable of independent movement, can respond to voice commands and has both entertainment protocols for keeping kids amused and home care systems to help look after older people. Jonney Shih, the Asus chairman, said: "For decades, humans have dreamed of owning such a companion: one that is smart, dear to our hearts, and always at our disposal. Our ambition is to enable robotic computing for every household." Zenbo will remind older people of doctor's appointments or medication schedules, and will monitor the home for emergency situations such as falls.

A modern solution for a modern problem: IBM tackles cyber security
IBM is tackling modern security issues with a modern approach: cognitive technology. As part of a year long research project, IBM is rolling out Watson for Cyber Security, a new cloud-based version of the company's cognitive tech that focuses on the language of security. IBM Watson is the organisation's technology platform that uses natural language processing and machine learning to reveal insights from large amounts of unstructured data. According to a statement, IBM is teaming up with eight universities around the United States to further scale the system and expand the collection of security data that Watson is currently trained with. According to IBM, training for Watson for Cyber Security is a crucial step in the advancement of cognitive security.
Sony streamlines business; offloads creative software products ZDNet
Sony continues to streamline its business by offloading part of the Creative designing and editing range. On Tuesday, Magix Software GmbH said the firm has acquired the "majority" of the Sony Creative Software (SCS) product range. In a press release, Magix said it now has purchased the full Sony Vegas Pro, Movie Studio, Sound Forge Pro, and ACID Pro product lines. The German software and app provider provides designing, editing and presentation software for both private and business users, and says the acquisition of SCS products will improve the firm's position across other markets, including the United States. Over the past few years, Sony launched itself down the path of a major restructuring effort in the wake of increased competition, poor sales and a weak Japanese yen.
KF: Escaping the Local Minimum
This report is my final project for the MIT Media Lab Class "Integrative Theories of Mind and Cognition" (also known as Future of AI, and New Destinations in Artificial Intelligence) in Spring 2016. Artificial Intelligence performs gradient descent. The AI field discovers a path of success, and then travels that path until progress stops (when a local minimum is reached). Then, the field resets and chooses a new path, thus repeating the process. If this trend continues, AI should soon reach a local minimum, causing the next AI winter. However, recent methods provide an opportunity to escape the local minimum. To continue recent success, it is necessary to compare the current progress to all prior progress in AI. I begin this paper by pointing out a concerning pattern in the field of AI and describing how it can be useful to model the field's behavior. The paper is then divided into two main sections. In the first section of this paper, I argue that the field of artificial intelligence, itself, has been performing gradient descent. I catalog a repeating trend in the field: a string of successes, followed by a sudden crash, followed by a change in direction. In the second section, I describe steps that should be taken to prevent the current trends from falling into a local minimum. I present a number of examples from the past that deep learning techniques are currently unable to accomplish. Finally, I summarize my findings and conclude by reiterating the use of the gradient descent model.

Machine learning is accomplishing Facebook's mission of connecting the world across language barriers. Facebook is now serving 2 billion text translations per day. Facebook can translate across 40 languages in 1,800 directions, like French to English. And 800 million users, almost half of all Facebook users, see translations each month. That's all based on Facebook's own machine learning translation system.
Artificial intelligence should be protected by human rights, says Oxford mathematician
With huge leaps taking place in the world of artificial intelligence (AI), right now, experts have started asking questions about the new forms of protection we might need against the formidable smarts and potential dangers of computers and robots of the near future. But do robots need protection from us too? As the'minds' of machines evolve ever closer to something that's hard to tell apart from human intelligence, new generations of technology may need to be afforded the kinds of moral and legal protections we usually think of as'human' rights, says mathematician Marcus du Sautoy from the University of Oxford in the UK. Du Sautoy thinks that once the sophistication of computer thinking reaches a level basically akin to human consciousness, it's our duty to look after the welfare of machines, much as we do that of people. "It's getting to a point where we might be able to say this thing has a sense of itself, and maybe there is a threshold moment where suddenly this consciousness emerges," du Sautoy told media at the Hays Festival in Hay-on-Wye, Wales this week.
