Oxford professor says computers could develop consciousness
If you leave your iPad untouched for a few days, you probably do not need to worry about much more than a flat battery and a backlog of emails. But with artificial intelligence, computers could soon have their own set of'rights' that could let them sue you for neglect, according to a leading scientist. Professor Marcus du Sautoy, a mathematician at Oxford University, has suggested that as AI leads to our devices developing their own consciousness, they may need their own laws to protect them. Advances in artificial intelligence could lead to computers and smartphones developing consciousness and they may need to be given'human' rights. He claims that if technology is conscious, it could also then be deemed as being alive, and so could win the right to be governed by laws on human rights.

Startup Nervana joins Google in building hardware tailored for neural networks
At the MIT EmTech Digital conference, startup Nervana announced plans to design and build a custom ASIC processor for neural networks and machine learning applications that the company's CEO, Naveen Rao, claims will run 10 times faster than graphic processor units (GPU). The news comes after Google last week announced it had secretly deployed its neural network and machine-learning-tailored processors in its data centers about a year ago. The company reported that its custom processor had improved performance by an order of magnitude. GPUs have become synonymous with machine learning. Interest in machine learning exploded a few years ago when Alex Krizhevsky, a student of artificial intelligence (AI) luminary Geoff Hinton at the University of Toronto, proved that machine learning systems could be trained on economically priced GPU hardware.

We here at Carnegie Mellon University wanted to let you know about a great event on artificial intelligence that we're hosting in conjunction with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in late June. You may have seen this recent article on these workshops featured in Wired. While we are but one of the four workshops going on in the coming months, we are the ONLY workshop in the series with a clear focus on the technical aspects of safe and controlled AI. We want to dive deep on how we can bring together machine learning, math-based systems reasoning, and software architecture to build AI systems with a high level of assurance. And we'd love for you to be a part of that conversation here in Pittsburgh.

It's been a big month for artificial intelligence. On May 9, a hot startup unveiled a shape-shifting personal assistant. On May 12, a legacy computer company that thinks it's a startup shifted a platform to cyber security. VIV is the product of two artificial intelligence wunderkinds, Das Kittlaus and Adam Cheyer. They've been tinkering with the smart frontier of software for the better part of 15 years. In fact, the two were working on natural language programs at DARPA long before working at that defense project was cool.

"When it makes mistakes, when it's misinterpreted and gives a wrong answer, then you correct it and it learns for the next time. I think what's important is you put safeguards, that there is still an override, that those don't become decisions. In the more critical the mission, the more you need to have checks and balances just as we do on humans, right?
Alibaba Said to Invest in Israeli Search Startup Twiggle
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is investing in Israeli startup Twiggle to tap its search technology and solidify its lead in Chinese e-commerce, according to people familiar with the matter. The Tel Aviv-based company could help Alibaba improve the quality of online-shopping searches as the e-commerce operator expands in China and abroad, people familiar with matter said, declining to be named because the matter is private. The startup will get 5 million to 10 million from Alibaba, one of the people said. Refining search technology has proven pivotal to shopping services like Amazon.com Inc. Twiggle, led by former Google Inc. executives Amir Konigsberg and Adi Avidor, uses machine learning and natural language processing to guess what shoppers are after. When users search for the "best laptop," Twiggle will try to understand what that means: such as highest screen resolution, most memory, longest battery life and so on.

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Technology that separates landing aircraft by time instead of distance cuts hold ups
High winds are one of the most common causes of flight delays and cancellations at airports, but new technology is now to put an end to the problem. Air traffic controllers at three of Britain's busiest airports are to adopt a new system that can automatically adjust the landing rate of aircraft depending on the wind conditions. Traditional landing procedures mean aircraft must be separated by a set distance when on approach to a runway. A new system that separates landing aircraft (pictured) by time rather than distance is to be introduced to Gatwick and Manchester Airports after a successful trial over the past year at Heathrow. Time-based separation replaces the old system of keeping large aircraft five nautical miles apart when they come into land.
