Artificial intelligence (AI) makes difficult tasks possible, such as sorting and recognising patterns in incredibly large data sets. The most challenging problems often have unexpected input and are often referred to as AI-compete or AI-difficult, implying the need for human-like computation. While some might think of AI as technology mostly used for complex visual tasks – or even as a far-fetched concept only found in science fiction – it's used in more ways than most people realise. That raises the question: could modern society get by without this fast-growing technology? Depending on the source, some claim AI has been around since ancient times, when the Greeks had myths about robots, and engineers from Egypt and China built automatons.

Here's a hard fact that will be hard for many to accept: Yes, a robot will probably be able to do your job someday. Remember the days when you had to go to a cashier at the grocery store and you didn't have to bag your own groceries? The same thing happening in your local grocery store is also happening in factories, and even offices all over the world. And if proponents of self-driving cars have their way, it won't be long before you never again need a human to give you a ride home from the airport. But who will hold the power in this brave, new, automated world?


Y Combinator basic income test makes up for jobs lost to tech

The test is still under development, so don't consider everything settled. With that said, it's no shock that this experiment exists in the first place. Both the tech world and politicians have been floating the idea of basic income for a while. Moreover, Silicon Valley is increasingly convinced that it can solve many of the world's ills -- witness efforts by Facebook and Google to bring internet access to less fortunate regions. Of course, whether or not the concept succeeds is another matter. Y Combinator argues that the march of technical progress will not only make basic income necessary at some point (once the robots have your job), but lower the cost of living enough to make the concept realistic.


US drone strike targets al-Shabab commander in Somalia

U.S. officials also said that American forces provided some support to an African-led military operation in Somalia that targeted Mohamed Dulyadayn, who is believed to be the mastermind of the Garissa University attack in Kenya in April 2015 which killed 148 people.


Prisoners' code word caught by software that eavesdrops on calls

SAY it out loud and the machines will know. Search engines are moving beyond the web and into the messy real world. Every call into or out of US prisons is recorded. It can be important to know what's being said, because some inmates use phones to conduct illegal business on the outside. But the recordings generate huge quantities of audio that are prohibitively expensive to monitor with human ears.


U.S. confirms drone strike against Somali militant commander

WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon says a U.S. drone strike on Friday targeted a senior military commander of al-Shabab in Somalia. U.S. officials say they can't confirm yet if he was killed. Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook says the strike targeted Abdullahi Haji Da'ud, a key coordinator of al-Shabab attacks in the region. Da'ud also previously served as head of the group's intelligence.

We're happy to announce Magenta, a project from the Google Brain team that asks: Can we use machine learning to create compelling art and music? Soon we'll begin accepting code contributions from the community at large. If you'd like to keep up on Magenta as it grows, you can follow us on our GitHub and join our discussion group.
