Machine learning and robots are going to create a lot of wealth, but they will also replace a lot of human labor. We saw many types of jobs disappear in the Industrial Revolution, but we also saw jobs created that had never existed before. In this new wave of technological disruption, the pace of job automation will outstrip job creation in the short term and cause a lot of unemployment and underemployment. In the Industrial Revolution you could jump off of any unskilled labor job, take some courses, learn some new skills, and find a new, likely higher paying job. What's different this time is that we now have AIs and machine learning algorithms that can replicate many of the cognitive skills these individuals would be pursuing, and they can do it much faster.


Bill Gates says these are the two books we should all read to understand AI

The tech world's book-nerd-in-chief wants you to add two books to your list of summer science reads. To get up to speed on artificial intelligence, Microsoft cofounder and philanthropist Bill Gates recommends Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence and Pedro Domingos's The Master Algorithm. Gates never misses an opportunity to plug books he likes, and yesterday (June 1) at Code Conference he took a detour from his and Melinda Gates's talk of philanthropy to recommend these two titles. "Certainly it's the most exciting thing going on," he said of artificial intelligence. "It's the holy grail, it's the big dream that anybody who's ever been in computer science has been thinking about."


Montreal knowledge-sharing platform Botler aimed at helping recent immigrants - Cantech Letter

A Montreal-based platform for sharing information aimed at incoming immigrants called Botler has been launched, developed by recent immigrants to Canada to help facilitate the process for new arrivals to help set up new lives. The platform is referred to as a "next generation" communications tool, using artificial intelligence and machine learning to facilitate group discussion in a hyper-organized and well-designed format. "This idea was born within a community of smart and highly skilled people who dream of a better life. They're willing to take big risks, give up everything and start over," said Botler's founder, Amir Moravej. "Still, so many prospective immigrants are using outdated, poorly designed messaging boards to ask and answer questions about the immigration process."


Google's Magenta project releases first piece of AI-composed music

Can artificial intelligence be used to create compelling human art? That's a question which Google's Magenta team, a group researchers from the Silicon Valley giant's Brain Team, looks to answer, using Google's open-source TensorFlow AI engine. So far, the signs point to yes: The team has now released the first piece of music been written via machine learning, a simple tune that was composed without any human hands. Related: Take the Millennium Falcon for a spin: New'Star Wars' vinyl features embedded holograms The first bit of music released by the Magenta team is a 90-second clip of piano, which had a drum beat added by researchers to give context to the computer's harmonic rhythm. It's an interesting amalgamation of sounds: simple, but full of complex musical ideas like repeated phrasing, form, and feeling.


IoT Seen Driving AI Adoption

While hardware vendors view it as another vehicle for selling more chips and servers that would allow enterprises to move processing power closer to data, the torrent of sensor and other information the Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to generate also is driving adoption of artificial intelligence technology, concludes a new survey of software developers. Evans Data Corp., the market intelligence specialist based on Santa Cruz, Calif., released a survey of developers this week that placed IoT at the top of a list of technologies propelling AI adoption. The findings are somewhat surprising given the amount of development related to big data technologies. The developer survey nevertheless found that IoT topped the list of AI drivers that included machine learning, neural networks, deep learning and pattern recognition technologies. "All the related disciplines that are commonly lumped together as artificial intelligence are being stimulated by the burgeoning growth of Internet of Things."

Microsoft's 'Smart Mirror' Can Read Your Emotions

Microsoft unveiled a smart mirror at a technology conference held in Singapore last month that allows users to view both their reflections and relevant information like the time, weather and traffic directions. Microsoft's Magic Mirror is a one-way mirror with a 23.6-inch LCD-lit screen behind it that displays white UI elements on a dark background. The device runs on a Raspberry Pi 3 microcomputer and uses Windows Hello technology to conduct facial recognition. The Magic Mirror's facial recognition system can recognize eight different emotions, including anger, happiness and surprise. Microsoft's Cognitive Services Face API matches a person's face to their profile, and allows the mirror to display information relevant to that person's mood.

The unlikely Republican presidential candidate who rose to popularity as a political outsider is now preparing for a general election battle against one of the most experienced policy professionals ever to run for president, presuming Hillary Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee. So as Trump's team begins to ready the candidate for the fall debates and drafts a series of speeches, including one on the U.S. economy, the New York businessman with no elected experience is cramming to get up to speed, consulting experts, asking questions and refining his ideas in anticipation of certain assault by Democrats. The crash courses in foreign and domestic policy are a rite of passage for virtually every presidential candidate. But they carry even greater importance for Trump, who has mocked the Washington establishment as overcomplicating problems and won over many voters with simple ideas that often lack details: build a wall to stop illegal immigration, defeat Islamic State, bring back jobs, make America great again. The campaign has tapped many of the usual sources to school the candidate.

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display


Self-driving? Try self-FLYING! Autonomous helicopter makes first 30 mile journey in Connecticut

Most people have heard about self-driving cars, with companies from Google to Honda developing autonomous vehicles. But driverless technology could be going beyond cars, with the testing of a self-flying helicopter. A Sikorsky S-76 commercial helicopter has now successfully taken off and flown autonomously 30 miles, before landing itself safely. The helicopter in the trial was the Sikorsky S-76 model which used Sikorsky's MATRIX system The Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA), used Sikorsky's MATRIX system. This is the same system that is use in the Optionally Piloted Black Hawk (OPBH) Demonstrator.
