Saudi Arabia's Uber venture: a case of if you can't beat 'em join 'em

The global automotive industry and the oil majors are not known for meekly rolling over when a competitor comes along โ€“ from General Motors involvement in killing public transport in Los Angeles in the 1940s to Shell lobbying to undermine EU renewables targets in more recent years. But recently, the world has started to see a new side to the sector: "If you can't beat them, join them; and if you can't join them, buy them out." This week Saudi Arabia announced a surprising new venture for the country's vast oil-generated sovereign investment fund: a 3.5bn stake in the ride-hailing startup Uber. The investment, which values six-year-old Uber at 62.5bn, is one of the largest ever made in a privately held company, and is roughly the same size as the sum total of all investments in the UK's tech sector over the course of 2015, according to the venture capitalist David Galbraith. Saudi Arabia's goal with its investment fund is to use some of the state's 2tn in assets to make long-standing investments that will fund the future of the country once its oil economy begins to sputter.


What is the Difference Between Deep Learning and "Regular" Machine Learning?

That's an interesting question, and I try to answer this is a very general way. The tl;dr version of this is: Deep learning is essentially a set of techniques that help we to parameterize deep neural network structures, neural networks with many, many layers and parameters. And if we are interested, a more concrete example: Let's start with multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs)... On a tangent: The term "perceptron" in MLPs may be a bit confusing since we don't really want only linear neurons in our network. Using MLPs, we want to learn complex functions to solve non-linear problems. Thus, our network is conventionally composed of one or multiple "hidden" layers that connect the input and output layer.


Self-flying helicopter makes first 30 mile journey in Connecticut

Most people have heard about self-driving cars, with companies from Google to Honda developing autonomous vehicles. But driverless technology could be going beyond cars, with the testing of a self-flying helicopter. A Sikorsky S-76 commercial helicopter has now successfully taken off and flown autonomously 30 miles, before landing itself safely. The helicopter in the trial was the Sikorsky S-76 model which used Sikorsky's MATRIX system The Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA), used Sikorsky's MATRIX system. This is the same system that is use in the Optionally Piloted Black Hawk (OPBH) Demonstrator.

Nearly 250 million video surveillance cameras have been installed throughout the world, and chances are you've been seen by several of them today. Most people barely notice their presence anymore -- on the streets, inside stores, and even within our homes. We accept the fact that we are constantly being recorded because we expect this to have virtually no impact on our lives. But this balance may soon be upended by advancements in facial recognition technology. Soon anybody with a high-resolution camera and the right software will be able to determine your identity.

Earlier this month, Bezos spoke at a conference sponsored by the Washington Post and said that Trump's comments were "not an appropriate way for a presidential candidate to behave." Bezos was asked again about the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and elaborated on his views. He said Trump's attempts to freeze critics in the media is "not appropriate." Anyone running for president should embrace criticism, free speech, and all forms of Constitutional values, he said. A Nixon administration official threatened to put a part of Graham's anatomy through "a big, fat wringer" if the Post published a controversial story.


Facebook builds AI that reads and understands posts and messages like a human

Facebook has built an AI system that can read text as well as a human. The new computer can read through several thousand posts per second, in more than 20 languages, and understand what they are all saying. The new tool will be used to let people get more out of the site, it said. "Understanding the various ways text is used on Facebook can help us improve people's experiences with our products, whether we're surfacing more of the content that people want to see or filtering out undesirable content like spam," it wrote in a blogpost announcing the change. Boston Dynamics describes itself as'building dynamic robots and software for human simulation'. It has created robots for DARPA, the US' military research company Deep Blue, a computer created by IBM, won a match against world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.

The gift of a new toy is met with enthusiasm by most children, but for one Texas girl, a doll that looks just like her triggered tears of joy. Courtney Fletcher Bennett gave her daughter Emma a new American Girl doll that was custom fitted with a prosthetic right leg, just like hers. In a video posted to Facebook Wednesday, Emma, whose last name was not disclosed, is presented the box by her little sister and told to read the enclosed letter. Emma lifts a flap covering the doll's legs, sees the pink prosthetic leg, flips the cover back down and gasps in surprise. "You gotta be kidding me!" she says before taking the doll out of the box and hugging it closely, tears streaming down her face.

Far from the packed arenas and showy lights of the campaign trail, the education of Donald Trump has quietly begun. The unlikely Republican presidential candidate who rose to popularity as a political outsider is now preparing for a general election battle against one of the most experienced policy professionals ever to run for president, presuming Hillary Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee. So as Trump's team begins to ready the candidate for the fall debates and drafts a series of speeches, including one on the U.S. economy, the New York businessman with no elected experience is cramming to get up to speed, consulting experts, asking questions and refining his ideas in anticipation of certain assault by Democrats. The crash courses in foreign and domestic policy are a rite of passage for virtually every presidential candidate. But they carry even greater importance for Trump, who has mocked the Washington establishment as overcomplicating problems and won over many voters with simple ideas that often lack details: build a wall to stop illegal immigration, defeat Islamic State, bring back jobs, make America great again.



Why Conversational UI Can't Win

A few years ago, Facebook basically forced most of its users to adopt the Messenger application (although, not for people who use the Facebook paper app,). After announcing its intention to build Chatbots into the message platform, Zuckerburg and company seem to be making good on the promise that Messenger would provide a new platform that users will find useful. Much of Facebook's F8 and Google's I/O conference focused on how AI happening inside of a conversation might reshape how we interact with our devices. This trend has been called conversational UI, cognitive learning, and smart chatbots. I prefer the term coined on Relay.FM's Presentable podcast, the V.U.I. or voice user interface.
