A vial of blood is small, fragile, and vital. In the days and weeks following an earthquake, or in the early stages of an epidemic, a sample of blood, properly tested, can save lives. That of the patient and, if a disease is noticed and handled before it spreads, that of many others. Drones, from ship to shore and then shore back to ship, may be the answer. Later this month, drone delivery service Flirtey, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine pathologist Dr. Timothy Amukele, plans to test ship-to-shore drone delivery in Cape May, New Jersey, on June 23rd.

Employees say they were even given wallet-size cards with instructions on how to deflect questions from reporters. After that, the only information that trickled out came from amateur pilots, who occasionally posted pictures of a strange-looking plane taking off from a nearby airport. In the past two decades, we've seen chess grandmasters and the best Jeopardy players in the world alike fall in competition to computers. Heads-up No-limit Texas Hold'em poker may be next. But the future of artificial intelligence (AI) is about way more than games. Last April and May, Carnegie Mellon University's AI, Claudico (developed by Professor Tuomas Sandholm and his team), played an 80,000-hand tournament against four poker pros. When the game ended, three of the four players had bigger hands than Claudico.
ROBOT airport check-in assistants will even carry your luggage for you
Queuing to check-in luggage is often one of the most stressful parts of travelling. But new advancements in robotics, currently being trialled at Geneva Airport, could mean these lengthy waits are a thing of the past. With the help of a robot named Leo, passengers at the Switzerland airport have had their bags checked-in for them. Swiss air transport specialists SITA teamed up with robotics firm BlueBotics to create the robot, which is programmed to dodge obstacles in its path, namely passengers in busy airports. It also has the ability to weigh bags, print baggage tags and carry two suitcases weighing up to 32kg. Or so says Neil Jacobstein, an AI expert who has consulted on projects for the U.S. military, GM, and Ford, at Exponential Finance - a two-day conference on AI and robotics sponsored by CNBC and Silicon Valley think-tank Singularity University. "We are going to eventually understand how our brain works - we are going to reverse engineer the brain," Jacobstein, who is also co-chair of the AI and robotics track at Singularity University, said at the event. Jacobstein said we are already making enough progress in our lifetime that we will be able to artifically replicate the neocortex - the part of mammal's brains that controls sensory perception, motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought, and language in humans, according to Science Daily. And Jacobstein said he doesn't think it will stop there. "And we'll even be able to replicate and accelerate other parts of the brain as well, like the hippocampus," Jacobstein told Tech Insider after his presentation.
Cylance, fighting malicious hackers with AI, hits 1B valuation after raising 100M
"If you can't beat them, join them" may not sound like the most encouraging pitch for a cybersecurity company, but a startup called Cylance has created an artificial intelligence-powered brain that essentially does just that, and it has taken off -- raising 100 million in a Series D round of funding and catapulting itself into the so-called'unicorn' club of companies with 1 billion valuations. The Series D round of funding was led by Blackstone Tactical Opportunities and Insight Venture Partners, along with existing investors (unnamed which but previous backers include strategics like Capital One, Dell Ventures, DFJ, Fairhaven, Khosla, KKR and Ten Eleven). It takes the total raised to over 177 million. Cylance is not disclosing its valuation but a reliable source close to the company says it's in the neighborhood of 1 billion -- a figure also reported by the FT. Founded and led by Stuart McClure, a serial entrepreneur and former CTO of Intel's McAfee, Cylance's system is part of the rising wave of companies -- including biggies like IBM's Watson and Google's Brain -- that use machine learning and AI to build services that replicate or enhance human thinking to solve more complex problems that might be too challenging or cost prohibitive for a person (or even an army of people) to solve.
