Knowing that an AI wrote Sunspring makes the movie more fun to watch, especially once you know how the cast and crew put it together. Director Oscar Sharp made the movie for Sci-Fi London, an annual film festival that includes the 48-Hour Film Challenge, where contestants are given a set of prompts (mostly props and lines) that have to appear in a movie they make over the next two days. Sharp's longtime collaborator, Ross Goodwin, is an AI researcher at New York University, and he supplied the movie's AI writer, initially called Jetson. As the cast gathered around a tiny printer, Benjamin spat out the screenplay, complete with almost impossible stage directions like "He is standing in the stars and sitting on the floor." Then Sharp randomly assigned roles to the actors in the room.

This creation has an extremely similar philosophy to that of Minuum, one of the best Android keyboards ever developed that's loved by many Android and Android Wear users due to its minimalist design and intelligent word prediction capabilities. While it's not a keyboard per se, Dango is an app that will improve whatever keyboard you happen to be using on your device. It flawlessly integrates with your keyboard of choice and takes only an extra line of space above it where it suggests emoji, GIF images, and stickers related to the contents of your current message.

Now Microsoft researchers are suggesting that records of the topics that people search for on the Internet could one day prove as useful as an X-ray or MRI in detecting some illnesses before it's too late. The potential of using engagement with search engines to predict an eventual diagnosis โ and possibly buy critical time for a medical response -- is demonstrated in a new study by Microsoft researchers Eric Horvitz and Ryen White, along with former Microsoft intern and Columbia University doctoral candidate John Paparrizos. In a paper published Tuesday in the Journal of Oncology Practice, the trio detailed how they used anonymized Bing search logs to identify people whose queries provided strong evidence that they had recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer โ a particularly deadly and fast-spreading cancer that is frequently caught too late to cure. Then they retroactively analyzed searches for symptoms of the disease over many months prior to identify patterns of queries most likely to signal an eventual diagnosis.

BMW sees new opportunities in artificial intelligence
BMW is hiring experts in machine learning and artificial intelligence as it develops the Vision Next 100 into a flagship production model due to launch in 2021. According to BMW CEO Harald Krueger says the high-speed of technological advances is giving BMW new rivals such as Tesla but also new opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence. "Until very recently our competitors were Mercedes, Audi and Porsche," Krueger said. "Now we are looking at newcomers such as Tesla or Faraday Future -- who knew these companies 10 years ago? "It shows how our industry is changing," the CEO said Wednesday in a keynote speech in the BMW World exhibition center near the company's Munich headquarters, held on the sidelines of the Automotive News Europe Congress. Earlier this year, the German automaker announced its new strategy focusing on electric vehicles, automated driving and new services in the field of premium individual mobility. To highlight the importance of machine learning, the BMW boss gave two powerful examples. Furthermore, Krueger says BMW's Vision Next 100 self-driving concept already showcases such advances. "The companion in the Vision Next 100 car is just that: a real companion that gets to know you as a person and responds to you as an individual," Krueger said. "I firmly believe this is not a threat to us, it's much more a huge opportunity to all of us -- mobility become more versatile.
